How did I manage to live 44 years on this earth and not know the secret to caring for my fabulous curly hair?!This book showed me how to wash it, condition it, style it and even cut it if I were so inclined. My eyes are opened and I have fallen in love with my crazy curls! If you have curls of any kind, or even wavy hair, this is a MUST read. Truly it is.

I'm disappointed that this book wasn't what I thought it would be. I hoped for more technical information and techniques, and less guru style fluff. If you are struggling to accept your hair, it's a bit Chicken-Soup for the Soul, with the Curly Confessions, and the 12 Steps Promise (to not abuse your hair anymore) and the hair horoscopes.I was personally hoping for more balanced insight on porous/texture aspects of hair rather than main focus on the shape of each curl.I will say I found the hairstyles nice to include, as well as the recipes for protein masks and diy gel spray, and tips for cutting your own hair, but I was disappointed that none of the videos were supported by my device.Overall, not for me, and there is as much if not more info in blogs that don't cost $10.

I have hair like Natasha Lyonne, 2c/3a curls. I can see how a lot of these tips work for other people, especially very curly hair. I have frizzy, upon frizzy, upon frizzy, wavy/swavy sometimes curly hair with seborrheic dermatitis/psoriasis (weird oily/dry scalp).Edit: I'm changing my review from a 4 to a 5. To those who feel discouraged, there is hope! Since the first time I reviewed the book I cut about 10 inches of my hair off. It rests at my shoulders now, and is a lot easier to experiment with since there is so much less of it. As of May 2015, no heating tools have touched my head, and it has worked out very nicely! It is almost the end of the summer and I have not cursed the humidity once.I'm still using a sulfate-free shampoo (AG Fast Food Shampoo), and I switch between Tresemme Un(done) conditioner (silicone and glycerin free) and Yes to Carrots conditioner. I use a leave-in conditioner and Ouidad Climate Control Gel (alcohol free). Navigating the curly hair products has been a lot easier after reading this book, and I think its a good resource for anyone who wants better curls.

It is not possible to give advice about care for every type of curly hair, since individuals' hair varies widely. However, this book attempts to classify several different types of curls and gives some general principles that the reader can apply, through trial and error, to find out what works best for her (or his) own curly head.If not properly cared for, much curly hair does not appear curly but just frizzy, poufy, flyaway, and out of control. If this describes your hair, it's possible that you have curls and don't know it. Much of the hair care advice that we get for straight hair is actually the opposite of what should be done for curly hair, so if you start the Curly Girl regimen, you might be surprised to find that you actually do have natural curls. But that's only half the book. The other half is a sort of manifesto. Apparently, very many people with curly hair have had traumatic experiences where they did not know how to care for their hair nor did anyone else (such as their mothers and hairdressers). Some were told their hair was unruly, wrong, "I can't do anything with it," or "unprofessional." Curly hair is treated as a problem to be solved. There is a strong ideological component to this book, to help naturally curly folks get over the mental block caused by this societal attitude. Sprinkled throughout the book are testimonies by men and women about how they came to accept their curls. There is even a tongue-in-cheek "12 Steps" at the back (some of them somewhat contrived) to lead the reader accept his or her curly hair and commit to care for it as such. There are also numerous "curl" puns sprinkled throughout. The tone is light, like a woman's magazine article extended to book length.I thought the curly-as-identity stuff was a little heavy-handed. One of the women, in her testimony, even refers to it as the "curly girl religion" (unless that was a typo for regimen), and that's not too far off the mark. I am naturally curly, but I don't think of myself as belonging to a victim class. Still, the book has good information about hair care, and I can imagine that some people might have a very hard time giving up straightening their hair, and would need all the identity stuff as an encouragement. The strong ideological tone grew out of the author's own experience of starting out hating, and then learning to love, her hair.According to the book, an estimated 65% of women have hair that has some amount of natural curl to it (varying from waves to "fractal" curls). I can only imagine that very many of them must be straightening theirs. Although I don't by any means think of straight-haired folks as oppressors nor do I want anyone with straight hair to feel inferior either, I do hope that an increasing number of curly-haired women decide to go natural, so that curly hair can become as normal, professional, and serious a look as straight.

I have always had what others refer to as 'The Bush' as in this wad of curly frizz on my head. Now my hairs mellowed out into what looks like long beach curls. Or so I've been told. Either way I used a few techniques from this book, like how to cut my hair without fraying it. Using oils while it's drying so that there's no frizz. And realizing that I don't need to use shampoo, which is still scary to me.What I really like about the book is that it doesn't read like a manual. It reads like someone with experience is telling you how to take car of your hair. It has relate able stories from fellow curly girls, about their curls. Hair style ideas, and even a Curly Girl Horoscope. My physical copy came with a DVD too, for those that need visuals when cutting their own hair or styling it.On the downside, my hairdresser thinks I'm a snob now. Because I want my hair cut dry, and I show her exactly where to cut. This book gave me too much confidence/authority over my hair. Read at your own risk.

My name's Toswiah, I'd say. Toswiah Green. Have you ever heard of me? But my name is Evie now. And I've never been brave. I can never tell anybody the real truth. But I can write it and say this story you're about to read is fiction. I can give it a beginning, middle, and end. A plot. A character named Evie. A sister named Anna. Call it fiction because fiction's what it is. Evie and Anna aren't real people. So you can't go somewhere and look this up and say Now I know who this story's about. Because if you did, it would kill my father."Readers facing their own identity crises will find familiar conflicts magnified and exponentially compounded here, yet instantly recognizable and optimistically addressed.""As she did so compellingly in Miracle's Boys and other books, Woodson tells a story of people torn apart by grief who eventually find a way to leave their sorrow in the past. Her poetic, low-key, yet vivid writing style perfectly conveys the story's atmosphere of quiet intensity.""Sophisticated readers ... will come away with images and characters who are impossible to forget."

This novel reminded me of one of the many Grateful Dead songs that helped me through tragedy over the years, Black Peter. "Just want to have a little peace to die and a friend or two I love at hand...See here how everything lead up to this day and it's just like any other day that's ever been." Sometimes a day comes along that changes everything, steals the face right off your head and leaves nothing but your soul.

Great book, interesting ending. Not for young kids because the book is very confusing. I recommend the book for middle schoolers and high schoolers

I bought this book for my daughter after the author visited her school and because it was on the official summer reading list. She really enjoyed the book but it was way too short for her (fifth grade). I wish the good authors like Ms. Woodson would write some meaty books that the kids who love to read can sink their teeth into. It's hard to find books that advance readers who are 10,11,12 can read without the subject matter being to mature.

Great book for a teen. Bought it for my daughter's reading project and she enjoyed the story.

I love Jaqueline Woodson!! She’s so dope! This book definitely captivated me, page by page. I couldn’t put it down! I wish there was a sequel to it, I gotta have more!

I got to the end of the book for a cliff hanger. Not sure if it was because it was on my kindle, but I wasn't sure if there would be a part two. Is there a sequel? Overall good read. I like the way the author depicts each character along with the sights and sounds.

Purchased for school. Didn't hear any complaints (and believe me I would) so assume they are happy.

I purchased this book for my son for an assignment. It arrived timely. Would not recommend this book if you are not crazy about your child reading a book with profanity. It is a good story. For this to be a children's book it is amazing that this author would choose to incorporate that language in this book just to impact the storyline or to get her point across. Other than that the book is fine. It arrived as promised.

The Mindful Brain: Reflection and Attunement in the Cultivation of Well-Being

    From Publishers Weekly

Siegel, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Center, blends personal experience with scientific research, attempting to capture the spiritual as well as the physiological phenomenon of "mindfulness"-or, in Siegel's acronym-speak, COAL: the state of simultaneous Curiosity, Openness, Acceptance and Love. Siegel's endeavor is timely and well-intentioned, but his is an elusive subject, and his text is peppered with confusing, semi-technical descriptions of mind-states (like meditation) and processes (like egocentric and allocentric circuitry) that frequently frustrate. Despite this, Siegel does introduce persuasive scientific evidence that meditation and the mindful state not only produce improvement in well-being, but also detectable physical changes in the brain, such as a thickening of the middle prefrontal lobes. He also introduces exotic new vocabulary, such as "ipseity," "the core sense of self beneath the usual personal identity." If the result of Siegel's marriage of medicine and mysticism is something of a muddle, he is to be commended for the effort, and his attitude toward science is unique in a medical doctor (tellingly, Siegal took a sabbatical from med school after being reprimanded for empathizing with his patients, rather than objectifying them, and used the time to pursue drawing and dancing). Though uneven and weighed down with too many acronyms, this is a notable science title that smartly combines the personal, the clinical and the spiritual. This is an excellent book in need of some editing. I have the sense it is one of Siegel's earlier books, as his later MINDSIGHT seems more polished. The pros:The book offers an incredible amount of information and understanding about the relationships between the functions and attributes of consciousness and the structures of the brain. It is really a "brain-mind" primer. The author is clearly of the opinion that mind is not merely an epiphenomenon of the brain, but an equal creator of it. If the brain is hardware, then the mind is the experiential aspect of using a computer--one step up from software, in fact. The number of areas the text touches upon is staggering: from child development to parenting, education, meditation, psychotherapy, you name it. Siegel is one of the leaders in this field, and the book offers an extensive bibliography of books and articles consulted in the writing. If someone has the time, a second reading is definitely warranted as the information can be overwhelming.Cons:This is part of the problem with the text and why I'm not giving it five stars. It is at times repetitive, stating the same things over and over in different ways. This can make it feel poorly organized. Sometimes the discussion of brain structures is on the rather dry and technical side, and this can seem a little irrelevant at times, especially for non-specialists. This was another issue: I had the sense the author was unable to target a specific audience. Was he writing for neuroscientists or laypersons? Sometimes it seemed like the former, sometimes the latter. The text was as a result alternately overly technical and at other times just right (for me, at least). Often the figures and diagrams were not where they should have been and the writing seemed awkward--clear indications than an editor (or two) was asleep on the job.Overall, this is a very good book--not entirely introductory--and this author clearly has much to offer. I am starting in now on MINDSIGHT, which, as noted, appears a more polished, more focused work. The science here is exciting and this book is just scratching the surface, a start and going in the right direction, it seems to me.

I've always been a fan of this author, he is a scholar, excellent writer and based on his writing a wise individual. What makes this book especially good from my perspective is the balancing of subjective information from the world's wisdom traditions and his own interior experience with their physical correlates i.e. rigorous science without reducing either to the other. This is extremely refreshing and this carefully researched book adopts an attitude of openness, curiosity and wonder. In addition, THE MINDFUL BRAIN is NOT written soley for academically minded individuals or psychologists. It is very readable by any intelligent layperson and extremely engaging. It is theoritical, but also compellingly practical in the spirit of Parenting From the Inside Out, which I highly recommend as well.I also The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are is an incredible book. However, this is much less accessible to the average person than this volume and the one in the proceeding paragraph.More concisely, what Daniel Siegel has done is brought together what we know from the various contemplative traditions, mind-body medicine and neuroscience together in a compelling argument for the value of mindfulness to everyday life, happiness and health. I would think this would be something everyone would be interested in.While it's a wonderful adaptation to be able to think ahead, plan, etc. This often carries one out of the HERE and NOW moment and keeps us on a treadmill of postponing our fulfillment. This book is about balancing our ability to look forward while remaining anchored in the present... the only place where love, happiness and peace could be found.I work in this area and have graduate education in biology, biochemistry and psychology. This is my life's passion and I own many books on this topic and present workshops. This is in many ways the book I wish I had written although humbly I must admit Daniel Siegel would be an extremely difficult person to top. Hopefully, however, someday I will be able to add value by complimenting his and other people's good work.

Excellent treatment of a very complicated subject.

Very dense read but excellent information. Will take me, a non-practitioner, to get through.

    very good

    Great book delivered on time.

This is a detailed thoughtful book about mindfulness. I work in the field of neurology so I appreciate the scientific theories of how our minds are impacted by mindfulness practice. It is beautifully read by the author who has a soothing, honest, relaxed way of speaking.

This is a really well written book that everyone can understand. It is worth the time to read it and a great book to read over again.Awareness is a gift and this shows us how important this gift is inour lives.
