Field Guide to the Spirit World by Susan B. Martinez is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late December.Oi, what’ve I gotten myself into....not for those that consider themselves knee-jerk skeptics, this book is about out-of-body-experience-based and New Age cross-referenced resources on the afterlife, apparitions, spiritual possession (especially the kind that affect a person’s behavior and mental state), infamous murderers and killers, prophetic visions, and dreams.

Very interesting book on a variety of paranormal experiences. From NDE, out of body experiences and spirit walking and how many outside influence's affect this. There are chapters on the afterlife, possession and UFO phenomenon, among many others. Are some psychological and health problems caused or made worse by the world of spirits? The author explains soul decay, soul travel before and after the death of the body, also how understanding this may help with positive results for autism and PTSD. These are controversial facts that some will disagree with. You have to read it and make your own conclusions. I received this book from Net Galley and Inner Traditions for a honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

This is an interesting take on spirits. It’s not your usual ghost hunter show perspective with residual energies and the like (it sounds like the author doesn’t believe in that). This is written entirely from the perspective that spirits are angels/dark angels, and various forms of mental illness and disorders such as multiple personality disorders, serial killing/murders, even autistics are possessed by these angels/dark angels and are being influenced by them. The author constantly throughout the entire book gives examples of various cases of those above, including such famous killers such as Gacy, and how certain actions or things they had said could be proof there was something controlling them and what they did. There are also quite a few biblical references throughout the book also offered as proof to the above. This can be a little rough on those who prefer the ghost hunting theories or who aren’t believers of angels or mental disorders being explained in this fashion. I found it beginning to get a little dry on me and harder to read about 2/3 through the book, but it was an interesting read nonetheless and made you really think with the examples offered, whether you believe the author’s theories or not.I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley and am giving my honest review.

This is a short but thought-provoking contemplation on how we as viewers respond to photos/artwork that displays suffering, and what the motivations of the creators of such objects might be, both conscious and latent. This is the first work by Sontag I've read, though it probably won't be my last. Her writing is concise, clear, and sometimes masterly. She brings Joyce Carol Oates to mind, or at least their nonfiction works have a similar, probing style (and here I'm thinking of Oates' "On Boxing").This book focused primarily on photos/artwork related to war, which makes its scope perhaps smaller than I would have desired in a work with a title that sounds so sweeping. Therein lies my only quibble with a book that I would have otherwise awarded five stars. There is mention of everything from the Crimean War to Kosovo, but smaller incidents like the photos of the mass suicides of the Baader-Meinhof Group, for instance, receive no attention. Sontag is intelligent (that's an understatement) so I can't for the life of me figure out why she excludes non-war related images from the category of her titular "Pain" (the exception being lynchings in Jim Crow South).That, as previously mentioned, is a minor quibble with an otherwise flawless study. It bears mentioning that the work is shorter than I would have preferred it to be, if only because Sontag's lucid prose is a joy to read. She mentions another work of hers dealing with essays on photography at some point in the course of "Pain." I think I will have to seek that book out. Hopefully it's a little longer. In any case, recommended...

I believe that this book gives good observations and questions of the nature and response to photography, art, and other depictions of war rather than any real answers. Is it voyeurism looking at the gruesome and tragic, or does it elicit some compassion and motivate protest? How are the dead of enemy, friendly combatants, and civilians shown in pictures? Is remembering things we personally have not experienced through photographs an ethical act? In modern times have we become inured to these images, accepted as the daily news diet? The examples she gives from paintings, photographs, and movies can be Googled pretty instantly as you read along. It goes beyond propaganda and romanticism, which were the first things I expected when I got this book. Honestly, I just felt the book was a good companion tool while seeing these visual examples, reading the quotes and observations Sontag gives, and seeing how I respond to them.

The author asks questions and triggers insights about our fascination with the spectacle of pain and proclivity for cruelty. There may be no magic remedies that would assure more caring attitudes toward Other and empathetic interactions among peoples, but it would have been a more satisfying read to have had the author present some possible ways of nurturing care for all.

Great book on the history of how photographs have been used when depicting war and tragedy. Sontag challenges the way society thinks about how these images are used and should be used. While I think some of her analogies and conclusions are flawed, overall I appreciate her point of view and believe that this book is a valuable asset to the student of art history, photographers in particular.

I had never heard of Susan Sontag prior to my Survey of Photography class. We read the first chapter of "On Photography", it was good. I went ahead and bought the book myself. Later in the semester we read a short bit on "Regarding the Pain of Others", it was even better. All I can say is based on those 2, especially this one, Susan Sontag is amazing. I don't agree with everything she says, but I can't recall an instance that I felt she was misguided or confused. Her thoughts and ideas are well founded and presented. I've since learned of her reputation, and must say she earned it. It's a shame she didn't have more time to write, though there are many other pieces I've yet to read. The best thing I can say is that reading her allows for, in my experience, the chance to almost have a discussion with her. It's written in such a way that it isn't spoon fed to the reader. That's not to say it's a hard read, but it's open enough that your own thoughts can blend with hers.

Susan Sontag is known as a lover as well as a critique of photography. Pictures have frames so they are framed (even when they are not staged or manipulated) and therefore can not show the truth in all its nuance, in all its effects. And besides: the photographer can have his or her intentions when painting or shooting the image, but that is not to say that this intention is indeed the consequence publication will have. They all kind of balance each other out into a story that ends up being about the people (mainly Vera and her father).- I adored Vera. She’s precocious, insightful, quirky, troubled, yet sometimes comes across as the surprising voice of reason.- The story is told from Vera’s father’s perspective and through Vera’s emails to her boyfriend back at home, Fang. Vera’s emails open a large window into Vera’s mind, which, it turns out, is an intriguing and thought-provoking place to be."I finally did sleep for a little while, only it was like the difference between Pringles and actual chips, like someone took sleep and then put it through a horrible industrial machine, made it into paste, and re-formed it and baked it into a shape that was supposed to look like sleep but was not anything even close."- Throughout the book, an “is she or isn’t she” vibe surrounding Vera’s mental health provides suspense. It had me paying very close attention to her emails to Fang to try to make my own judgments.What I Didn’t Like:There is a bit of a lull through the middle, when the story gets stuck meandering around Vera and her father’s European history tour and the other people on it.A Defining Quote:"That was the thing about Vera. I happen to teach college English, and I use new novels every semester to keep things lively. I have a list somewhere here on Amazon of wonderful books I've used in my classes over the years. I will add this to the list. A friend recommended this, and before I was even halfway through, I knew this would be perfect for a college class. It's because it revolves around a 17-year-old girl, Vera, from Rancho Cucamonga, California, who may be bipolar after an incident at a party. Her father, Lucas, a college English teacher (hey!), who's only recently in her life, takes her to Vilnius, Lithuania, for a vacation and history tour, hoping she and he will better understand each other.My students and I have found the novel funny, touching, startling, philosophical, and truthful. I'm reading their essays as I write this--and I see the richness they've pulled from the story. We learned a hell of a lot about Vilnius, too, which used to be a major Jewish stronghold in Europe until WWII and the Nazis came through. You may have heard Holocaust stories before, but Vilnius will make it fresh. Vera is honest, witty, and adds a lot of humor--even while you cry, too. If you like your novels involving and thoughtful, this is one to pick up. The cover is pink, as if it's chicklit, which is misleading. Lucas is the narrator, and through his eyes, we see Vera, Vera's mother Katja, and a whole group of colorful characters on the history tour.

A captivating look at family history, the Holocaust and the struggle of mental illness that families and individuals face.I really enjoyed Rufi Thorpe's second book and learned about parts of the Holocaust that were new to me, as the majority of the book takes place in Lithuania.I highly recommend Dear Fang, With Love.

Beautifully written - thought-provoking - and although sad, ultimately hopeful.
