I don't get the hype on this one at all. I'm glad so many loved it because it eases my conscience a little about having to give it such a poor review, but I just don't understand how there could be so many comments on social media about this being the best book people have read all year. I mean, people are going absolutely crazy over it!As usual with this publisher, the marketing and promotions were outstanding (I totally bought into all the initial excitement). The advance copy came belly-banded with a fictional newspaper article about the crime, which I thought was really fun. As far as the story goes, I'd expected something fast-paced, engaging and suspenseful, but feel like I got a slow-moving, go-nowhere book that wasn't even redeemed by the supposedly big twist at the end. The style is very generic (even for its genre), with pages of dialog that did nothing to further the story or give depth to any of the characters. The whole book just seemed like filler.I'm in the minority here so chalk this one up to personal preference, I guess.

Whoa! This was brilliant!This book right here is the reason that I love psychological thrillers. This has become an overly saturated genre with every one taking a stab at writing these twisty little thrillers but more often than not they fall flat. It takes a talented mind and writer to pull off a really shocking twist successfully. Alex Michaelides has done just that because I did not see that coming at all and for that I thank you! *claps hands*Alicia Berenson appears to have it all. She's a successful painter and her husband, Gabriel, is a famous fashion photographer. What would drive this seemingly happy woman to shoot her husband five times in the face only to never speak again? Psychotherapist, Theo Faber, is desperate to work with Alicia to see if he can breakthrough her silence to finally find out the truth.That's it. That's all you get. I don't want anyone to be spoiled. I suggest not reading too many reviews as it is inevitable that some jerk will spill the beans. Don't be that jerk!If this is any inclination as to the type of reading year 2019 is going to be then HURRAH! Dare I say that this has made it to my "favorites" shelf. Highest recommendation! 4.5 Stars, Spoiler-Free ReviewI decided to go into this novel with a clean slate, a blank canvas (no pun intended). I didn’t read any reviews because I didn’t want to see something that would give me any clues, either intentionally or unintentionally. When I know there’s a twist, or if I see hints of something, I usually figure out what’s going on. So I entered this story in the dark, curious to find what I would discover.This is definitely an experience. For me, the author’s words painted a vivid picture (again, no pun intended). The timeline of the story was a bit hazy at points because the main character, Theo, talks in the past tense, but about a more recent past and a time that seems undefined. I won’t mention anything that could spoil what happens. All I’ll say is that I had several theories, varying in their levels of crazy. When I got to the end, I wasn’t knocked off my chair surprised because I read a LOT of books in this genre, but I also can’t say that I completely saw it coming either. Instead, I found myself trying to retrace steps and get oriented. At some point I feel like I want to read the story again to truly put the rubik’s cube in order.At the end of the day, I think this novel has the potential to be one that is widely discussed, and may even become a motion picture. There’s an intentional murkiness (reminiscent of a movie like Memento) as the psychotherapist, Theo, embarks on a journey to find out why Alicia doesn’t speak, if she really killed her husband, if she’s insane, and/or the motive IF she did indeed kill Gabriel.It’s not a fast-paced tale in terms of really big happenings or scary moments; but for me, the short chapters went quickly and I was intrigued throughout because I wanted to know what happened and I liked the author’s writing style. I’d recommend it for those that enjoy this genre, and those that enjoy being part of the buzzed-about-books experience.

What makes Gone Girl and Sharp Objects more then just cheesy page turners is the quality of the writing. What makes The Silent Patient such a tacky slog is the consistently lazy, cliche-ridden, dumbed down prose. Who cares about a mystery when you have to trudge through page after page of sophomoric prose?

Could have been more character development. Everyone was just a little bit manic. Beginning was slow, ending felt rushed. Certainly not the must read everyone is making it out to be. Could have been better.

This is indeed the perfect thriller. Beautifully written, characters so real you feel like they're right there in the room with you. A truly surprise ending, but one that makes perfect sense. The word Perfect sums it up. This novel is flat-out perfect. Read it.

Alex Michaelides is an author to watch! This is his first novel, and it is a humdinger! It is a murder mystery, told from the point of view of a psychotherapist who switches jobs so he can try to help Alicia, the silent patient of the title. Alicia is accused of shooting her husband in the face 6 years ago, and hasn’t spoken since. The psychotherapist tries unsuccessfully to talk to Alicia, and then talks to her friends and family. Lots of issues arise during his “investigation.” He is also dealing with a cheating wife, which causes him lots of extra stress. Readers are also given a look into Alicia’s journal, in which we learn more about her life and background. The book is a fast-read, well-written, exciting, and offers a surprising ending that is clever and believable. What a wonderful story!!

This was a great book with a twist I never saw coming. It was a true page turner and a great Sunday read.

I absolutely love that this story is based upon a real Banyan "Wishing Tree" in a small village called Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong, and that there are other smaller ones among Hong Kong's countryside.As if the story wasn't beautiful enough, the author took a lot of time explaining about wishing trees and how they are either banyan or camphor trees because these kinds of trees because they have aerial roots that curve & twist into unsual shapes that seem to look magical! She then goes on to tell her reader tells us that people come all though out the year to toss their wishes onto the wishing trees branches, but the majority of the people come during their Lunar New Year. She also speaks of the Ng Bo Dip which means "5 Treasures Piles" in Cantonese that the wishes are written. The brightly colored red & gold papers are then tied to a Mandarin Orange and thrown high into the branches of the wishing tree. I bet it's a beautiful sight! The author also includes a directions on how to make your very own Ng Bo Dip and also includes a black & white copy for the reader to photocopy, color and cut out!A definate treasure to have in your home library!

The boy Ming is disappointed in the wishing tree introduced to him by his grandmother when the tree fails to give him his wish that his aged grandmother survive her illness. But after a time when he does not go to it anymore, he comes near it again when a group of friends invite him to go with them. In talking with his friends and a nearby vendor, Ming realizes that the tree granted his grandmother's greatest wish for him--that he be happy. The simple tale is based on a real tree in a village in Hong Kong. The author Thong with bright pictures by McLennan describe how the Chinese write their wishes on pieces of paper, and toss these into the branches of the tree. Following the tale, the author gives directions on how young readers can follow this practice for themselves with their own wishing tree.

First released at the beginning of the dot.com bubble, this book was prescient in its understanding of how the Internet, or the World Wide Web in particular, would change business organizations and behavior. The book is actually a synthesis of several authors, though David Weinberger seems to be the primary author. The book starts with 95 theses, or statements, about how the WWW is changing business and what businesses need to do to survive or even succeed in this new environment. The quantity of 95 of course refers to the 95 theses nailed on the door of the church by Martin Luther to begin the Protestant Reformation. After the 95 statements, the subsequent chapters explore how relations between consumers, customers, workers, entrepreneurs, managers and investors are changing both within the corporation and within the marketplace. Along the way, the authors give great insight into how the form and function of markets have changed over the centuries as technology has changed. And the central theme is humanity. With the Internet becoming more widespread, the conversations between customers and suppliers is moving back to what markets originally began as, a place for conversations that might or might not involve money... What an interesting thesis? The onset of the world wide web that is supposedly eliminating the need for face-to-face contact has actually done the opposite, it is forcing organizations like companies to cater to the most human of needs... the need to socialize.

The authors do an outstanding job explaining the change and where to go from here.Main premise: Until the late 1800's/early 1900's the world mainly traded as an agrarian society. Markets were local meaning we traded in our own village and local societies. Markets like these were very personal. With the onset of the industrial age, markets became impersonal and markets were spoken to in masses through large advertisements and other one-way mediums. Today, the world is turning into a mass-agrarian society. Through technology and transportation the world is becoming small and advertising has become two-way meaning the consumer has a voice. Great for the consumer. Challenging for the marketer. Marketing to niche portions of the population requires carefull thought and creative mediums.Review of content: While several points are made repeatedly, the reader definitely connects with the main points and logic. These authors do an excellent job highlighting the situation and creating the recipe market in this new environment.

In The Cluetrain Manifesto, we see the classic sign of a revolution. Even the reviews here show it. The sign is this: controversy. Loosely quoting some dead guy, "If an idea does not at first seem absurd, it is doomed to failure." Marketeers, execs, and PR Heads all agree, the idea of actually letting your marks and your worker bees communicate freely is absurd. Yet, given the demand for it, maybe the market is on to something. That something is not new, just as the Manifesto will tell you. That something is a return to business in a networked market, rather than a disconnected, you'll-never-see-who-made-this market. The similarities between Omar needing a new flying rug, and asking his neighbor (who's in the business) what he should look for in a quality flying rug, and me looking for a computer and looking at what other consumers had to say about the company I found a great price from, are obvious. If I need information on a product, the first place I go is to my computer. If need be, I then go to the phone (a form of market equalization that was never fully exploited). If the web had been prevalent twenty years ago, my father wouldn't have bought a PC Jr, because he would have known what people on the inside were saying. And hey, make it a two-way street, and people on the inside will know what we require from their company. Nice, eh? That's the core of the book, and while the truths are fairly self-evident, the Cluetrain Manifesto goes all-out to explain them in the gonzo-est way possible, to the people who need to open up most: the companies.

Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco has written extensively about human trafficking. As she looked into recruiting by terrorists and compared human trafficking, she found many similarities. In The Jihadi Next Door: How ISIS is Forcing, Defrauding, and Coercing Your Neighbor Into Terrorism, she draws parallels between the techniques of human traffickers and terrorist organizations.Both criminal groups target vulnerable, lonely populations. They promise belonging, fulfillment, and escape. And in both cases, the promise does not measure up. Human traffickers promise glamour, job opportunities, or escape from poverty. Terrorist organizations promise much the same, but with a veneer of religion.This last point ends up being the focus and, in my mind, the downfall of Mehlman-Orozco’s book. She wants to make the point that Islamic terrorists are all about power, and not about religion. A sampling:“Religion is the veneer used by war profiteers to recruit disposable people into terrorism.”“A terrorist uses religion or social movements to give them the facade of legitimacy.”“These terrorist organizations have no genuine affinity or interest in the causes or religions they latch on to, they are simply used as a tool to rationalize and legitimize their criminality and self-interest.”“This isn’t about Islam. These terrorists are not practicing Muslims, despite what they profess.” ““Ultimately, when we think of ISIS there should be absolutely no association with religion because that is nothing more than the facade they want everyone to believe in.”ISIS’s “ criminal organization has nothing to do with Muslims or Islam.”I completely buy her premise that, like human traffickers, terrorists target the most socially and psychologically vulnerable. But she hammers the “Islamic terrorists are not Muslim” point so long and hard that it sounds like she's trying to convince herself of it. Seriously, how can anyone who reads the news or sees ISIS or Al-Qaeda coverage seriously believe there is no association with religion, that they have nothing to do with Muslims or Islam? A minority sect, maybe. Violent dissenters from the mainstream of their faith, sure. But not driven by religion? It just sounds ridiculous. I don't buy it. I think this emphasis really weakened her argument. Even many of her personal examples, in which she tries to distinguish between the social reasons for Westerners joining up with Muslim terrorists, as opposed to religious motivations, ring hollow.Are there good, peaceful Muslims in the world? Of course. Most Muslims are peaceful, decent people. Do some Muslims believe their faith compels them to make war on non-Muslims? Obviously. The author did so well to choose a deliberately provocative title for her book, as it made me wonder what on earth she might have written, wonder how prejudiced she might be (because she'd have to be, right, to come up with a title like that?) and how she came to her conclusions. It's one of the most eye-opening books I've read this year, and possibly in my entire 50 years.This author's an academic and a RL person, not a politician, so she doesn't have anything to lose by being to upfront and open about the US government's own part in what's happened to their country, and to the world. It's a bit Team America, World Police, tbh and she echoes many thoughts that non-academic me has on the US. She's not afraid to criticise and call out her country and its actions, and also to clarify what are the true teachings of Islam and clarify what is not true Islam, or what is possibly subjectively interpreted Islam on behalf of terrorists worldwide, and I think she should be admired for how far she's gone. She's an educator, a wife, a mother and has a passion for what she believes in, is how her book comes across.I think that in her bid to learn more herself, and educate her students and readers, she's gone deep, deep into her research. She jokingly mentions at one point that she wouldn't be surprised if her googling hasn't brought her to the attention of the FBI, and I wouldn't be surprised if she did some day get a knock on the door, as she's been in one-on-one correspondence (vetted, of course) with perpetrators of terrorism, both proven and possibly proven in the eyes of the US government, but not in the eyes of the perpetrators, their friends and their family, and many have been very open. Of course, stuff gets redacted and edited, but she's gone where many people wouldn't have gone in trying to get answers about the how and why of radicalisation/indoctrination. I think there's likely to be a pretty thick file on her, tbh.She quotes US, French, Danish, British, Georgian and other examples of terrorism and points out the common themes, but also shows how these themes arise, and our - as individuals, as a country, as a government - roles in what's happened to our countries. She's refreshingly not all US-pro, but is happy to point out where her country has erred, and where it's... manipulated things for what it likely sees as the greater good. It's made me really wary of visiting the US as a non-Caucasian person and some of what she says corroborates my mixed-race son's experience of visiting the US as a newly qualified teacher, and being questioned time and time again about his occupation, simply because he has a vague Arabic look about him (he's half Asian, half Caucasian).I admire her persistence, her courage, her determination to get things from the horse's mouth, and how open she's been in her support and her criticism. I devoured this book when I initially expected to skim it. It's a book that could and should be part of the curriculum, because it's all about education, being informed and having the courage to stand up. It's about prejudice, unjustified and perhaps justified to some, that leads into decisions that have changed history.Is it an easy book to read? No, because it's very, very detailed. There are images and descriptions of beheadings by child soldiers, some of whom were described as toddlers and young children (the toddler mentioned mimed a throat being slit, and the other child, under the age of 8, I think, carried out the deed in the name of Allah, apparently). There's mention of the many journalists and innocents killed. Mention of Muslims killing Muslims, and tricking their fellow Muslims into revealing that they're of a different caste, who're then murdered in cold blood. There are detailed atrocities in this, and it did make me leave the book a few times to be able to get the vivid images out of my mind. Some of the names of the people killed are universally recognised, if you've seen the news over the last few years, and the author has spared no details.It's another book that's made me lose respect for the US, and be more wary of it than ever. And, I think the potential for more damage to the US, and to the world, rests with its current government and policies. Its audience seems to be youth, or others who are coming to the topic without much background in news analysis or current events. Many chapters end with platitudes which may be distracting to the adult reader.There are some really interesting ideas within. Mehlman-Orozco comes from a background of working with sex trafficking victims and offenders, and makes much of the parallels between deceiving and recruiting vulnerable youth into sex work and using similar tactics to draw teens into terrorism. She also believes that Isis is nearly unrelated to Islam, just using religion as a cover for criminality. Thus the religious term "jihad" should not be used to describe Isis' activities, notwithstanding her own title.This is a lighter, more basic treatment of the topic than I had expected, but might be a good fit in a high school classroom or similar setting. I realized rather quickly reading this book that things fell into place. My other studies just didn't seem to add up. I mean they 'looked' like and made me feel like I was 'getting it'. But I wasn't really sure. Once you invest the time to read and understand the concepts in this book, why they're telling you to look at something a certain way and what the perspective is, it kind of jumps off the page at you. Truth be told, I've studied a lot before this, and maybe this was the book that it just clicked for me, but this was an easy to read nonsense book that's laid out perfectly to easily upstanding and start practicing trading in a way that you'll feel confident that you can do and will be successful. Kudos to all involved in writing this book. Thank you!!!!!

The first one third of the book has great information about finding stocks that are on the verge of running big. He shows many examples of charts for some of the biggest stock gainers in history right before they started their huge runs.The last two thirds of the book is just total self indulgence by the author and is mostly a very long advertisement for subscribing to his website. He also takes quite a bit of space espousing his personal political views, which I found especially irritating..As far as the investing advice, it"s a good start, but missing some key advice.1. Those big running stocks will only come around a few times in a life time. What do you do while you"'re waiting for the big one.2. The stocks that run big over several months, or even years, also have big downturns and corrections during their runs. He does not really address that.

I have read over 150 books on stock trading and investing. I have reviewed them all here on Amazon. With this book I will now have read "How to make money in stocks" three times, reading the 2nd, 3rd, and now 4th edition. I have to say after reading this book at different stages in my trading journey, and having used its principles in real investing and trading I truly believe this is the #1 stock trading/investing book out there. I myself have used the principles of this book to average over a 20% return in my 401K from 2003 to 2007 and then like some of the smart readers of O'Neil's newspaper went to cash in January 2008 completely sidestepping the financial meltdown thanks to his principles. Author William O'Neil is the modern day predecessor of the greatest trading legends, Jesse Livermore, Nicolas Darvas, Gerald Loeb, and Bernard Baruch. From the investing results of his proteges Gil Morales and Chis Kacher with their accumulative 18,000% return during the boom years that they document in "Trade like an O'Neil Disciple" he is likely the greatest living pure stock trader in the world. William O'Neil also runs O'Neil and Company and advises some of the world's top money mangers. O'Neil is also publisher of the Investor's Business Daily newspaper which he subsidizes because it is not profitable. (I think he publishes it for himself, all of his other businesses are profitable.) At the beginning of the book you will see the price charts of the greatest winning stocks of the past 100 years. They are marked with notes to show you what proper bases look like and what a stock looks like coming out of a cup with handle formation. You will see the difference between a strong chart and a weak chart. It is very interesting to see what a climax top looks like right when a stock runs out of buyers and then investors sell in a panic. How the 50 day moving average relates to a chart along with the general market is also very educational. The book lays out both excellent fundamental reasons for buying growth stocks using the CAN-SLIM method along with the rules on when to buy them. It also advises to cut all losses to no more than a maximum of 7% to 8%, and to prepare to take profits when you are up 20% to 25% in a winner. The key is to cut the loser when it starts failing to make new highs out of a chart cup with handle formation, and also let a winner run and do not sell it unless it pulls back sharply or it runs to high to fast and fails to hold the new highs with a climax top formation. The CAN SLIM method is based on a stock having these fundamental criteria:C-Current quarterly earnings per share should be up a major percentage-25% to 50% minimum-over the same quarter the previous year.A-Annual earnings growth rates of 25% to 50%.N-New products,new services or new management along with new price highs.S- Supply and demand:big volume demand for the stock at key points.L- Buy only the leading stock in the top industry groups.I-Only buy stocks with some institutional sponsorship.M-Only buy into an up trending market. The book covers each of these areas in great detail. This deluxe edition of the book also has a free month of eIBD, an action plan DVD, and admission to a three hour IBD investing workshop. You will understand the CAN SLIM system after reading this book. This system was built after studying the greatest winning stocks of the past 100 years both their fundamentals and technicals. This book is a wealth of information. It is not based on anyone's ego, beliefs, or predictions. William O'Neil has turned making money in stocks into a science. AAII's independent study showed the CAN SLIM method was #1 of many systems tested from 1998 to 2009 with an average 35.3% annual and cumulative 2,763% return. The only thing I disagree with in this book is O'Neil suggesting buying and holding stock mutual funds for 15 or 20 year time horizons because unlike stocks they do come back and history has shown 10 year holding periods are almost always a win. Studies have shown you can double your returns in a stock index by simply selling when it crosses down through its 200 day moving average and only buying back when it crosses back above the 200 day moving average. I could not watch my mutual fund's value melt away and do nothing, they do track the market very closely. I do not understand why O'Neil would put that in his book after the carnage of 2000 and 2008. I mentally can not deal with such large losses I go to cash from mutual funds in recessions and down trends. The book could have also gone a little deeper into the psychology of investing/trading, most traders and investors have huge problems cutting their losses, letting their winners run, and sometimes even pulling the trigger to buy the stock. I would love to have had a chapter on O'Neil's thoughts on trading psychology. Regardless, in my opinion the #1 book on investing/trading on the market today.

This is the CANSLIM investing system by O'neil owner of investors.com or Investors Business Daily (IBD). I subscribe to IBD and the CANSLIM trading system and find these books compliment their home study courses. The only reason I am giving this 4stars is that because it comes of as an advertisement for the CANSLIM system and you have to subscribe to investors.com and some of their extra products to take full advantage of the system.

This book was recommended to me by a few different seasoned traders. It is a lot of information to digest, but Mr. O'Neil seems to shoot from the hip and tell it like it is. I appreciate this writing style and will use many of his strategies and quotes as reminders of how to craft my own set of rules ad manage my risk. Great set of charts with examples of to help learn to identify the different patterns. Very helpful!

This is a masterpiece written by the Grand Master of stock trading. Many books written about the markets promise much but deliver little substance. This book is packed with actionable advice and after reading it cover to cover should be used as a reference manual.

The fast food section will amaze you, an Arby's Big Montana , Italian or Turkey sub sandwich contains an entire days worth of Sodium. Not to pick on Arby's, many of the fast food joints have a sandwich/meal that is over 2000 mg of sodium. Even if you find a sandwich/burger with only 1200 mg, the Fries will finish you off. A Hardee's Big Country Breakfast w/sausage 2310 mg of sodium, so you are done with your days sodium right after breakfast!I also enjoyed reading the ethnic foods sections, especially Alaska, Moose, Caribou, Venison, and Bonehead Whale, all very low in fat, calories, and sodium.

I was recommended this book by a dietician...it basically helps you make informed choices when planning what to cook, when you're out shopping at the grocery store, and especially when you're eating out. It is amazing how many calories some of our meals contain and if we only took the time to really scrutinise the food we consume, I think it can make a lot of difference to our health. I keep this as a guide when I prepare meals at home, and it has also taught me how to read labels on packaged foods etc...won't it be great if all restaurants did the same when we eat out?

I have been 100% pleased with the book so far. Everything I have wanted to find has been there and after a little use I am becomming a bit more familiar with the somewhat odd categorization and organization of individual food items. If I had to find something to criticize about the book it would be that a book of this size (over 600 pages) that one expects to use frequently would really be much more pleasant to use if it was spiral bound for easier access.

If you are diabetic this is a must have book to help change you eating habits. I would recommend to anyone..Carb counting isvery important and this book will definitely get you a head of controlling your blood sugars. Also there are some great diabeticreceipts to cook..I love this book and couldn't do without it..

good coverage of a wide variety of foods

I think this is one of the most comprehensive books I have found that helps with every item people are interested in when tyring to count carbs, fiber, calories, fat and much more. It is laid out very nicely so you can find almost any item quickly. I have my own book and bought a second one for my daughter. I have several of these kind of books on my shelf but this is the one I use every time.
