This books is just a biography about someone without enough experience to write a good one. In spite of the title, it's not about America and a emigre's take on it. It's just about her--a comedian that's not particularly successful. Sadly, other comedians tell us to buy it by writing reviews, because these books are earning money for them. And the reviews for this book, you will note, aren't about the book. They are about Maeve. She's certainly a nicer person than It's a just a biography and not really about America or her take on it. It's just about her--a comedian that's not particularly successful so she decided to write a book. I would say Maeve is a nicer and friendlier person than Amy Poehler--so it's not quite as narcissistic--just not particularly funny or interesting.

I gotta respect any girl who could convince two friends to travel to Iraq for a comedy gig (!) because maybe possibly probably she had a mild crush on the guy who invited her. This delightful series of essays by comedienne Maeve Higgins made me chuckle and made me think. I didn’t realize until afterward that it demonstrated the difficulty and responsibility of lending one’s voice to the disenfranchised, even when the audience is expecting you to be funny. And only funny. The audiobook version is aces.

Maeve tackles some tough topics for present-day America and immigrants. Her insight as an Irish immigrant living in New York City is brilliant. Not only does she tell her stories about her homeland and her new home with brutal honesty, but she relates the stories of those she meets with such great treatment, too.Not all the stories deal directly with immigrants, but since that's her status, it comes across in an indirect manner. And whether she's talking about getting ill while trying to swim with dolphins or working as a babysitter in New York or as a stand-up comic, she lets us in on her adventures, her hopes and dreams and fears with respect. An she does it with the proper dash of humor.

I had never read Maeve Higgins before, but I’m so glad I discovered this book because now I get to go back and read everything she’s ever written. Maeve is a keen observer and an extraordinary writer. This book made me laugh and cry, and I’m still thinking about it days after I’ve finished it. If you have never read Maeve Higgins you need to get you some Maeve Higgins in your life STAT! You’ll be very glad you did. This is by far the best book I’ve read all year.

Maeve HIggins is one of the funniest writers but she makes us think too, sometime sit up in bed think. Compliments Girl on Your Kiss had us all laughing out loud. Are You My Husband explores the cross over from the highness of aloneness to the lowness of loneliness. Maeve is a Philosopher Queen with a witty satirical edge in the best traditions of Wilde and Swift. Give yourself a treat, read this beautiful book!

I've heard Maeve on NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, and found her words and manner very entertaining. And that was my expectation here. This book did not live up to that. I gave it an extra star because there were a couple of moments inside that I found poignant. There were fewer that were actually funny. It's not a long book, but in the end, it was a chore to get through.

Maeve Higgins is fantastically funny and deadly earnest. She is modern Ireland and what is best about America. She makes me proud of my Irish ancestry, and anxious for more.Maeve is a journalist, an essayist, a comedienne, and 100% female, in the best possible way..If you don't like a particular essay, skip it. But you will go back. I think I will go back again and again.

Higgins is a funny girl. I laughed out loud a number of times during this series of essays. I'll keep an eye out for more from her. Not sure why she would choose to occasionally hop on a pedestal and attach social issues to her otherwise witty narrative (white privilege, really?), but she did. Better for her just to tell stories and make observations and stay away from politics.

I bought the item thinking it was the actual book itself, so it was an accidental purchase actually...I was going to look into returning it but it would cost $4 to mail it and it only cost $10 so I'd only get $6 back and considering that I just purchased the genuine book and am waiting for it, I've already waited a few days for the book, I'm just going to keep the participants guide. I haven't read it yet , it looks like it'll be useful for small groups and devotionals though...may help with some sermons.I wasn't glad to find out that it follows along with a dvd that amazon doesn't sell with the purchase, but it does explain why it is so cheap. There's an ISBN on the back of the book for the cd but I don't understand if that can actually be of any help with the cd.N.T. Wright is an excellent scholar though so I don't entirely mind having anythin of his work in my possesion, i bought the participants guide because i saw it was $10 online and got excited about it's cheapt price without realizing it was'nt the entire book as well.But ah well ...

This would not even get two stars except that it included a video of the author leading the lessons. The original book speaks for itself quite well.

A favorite!

A brilliant book all the way through, filling in holes that I wasn't aware were in my eschatology. But what I really loved were his concluding comments about a missional eschatology.

Delves into an aspect of Christian belief that is often overlooked or misunderstood.

I started this book with a little trepidation about the subject matter. Fortunately, it is so well written and his presentation so compelling that I find myself with more hope now than ever before in my 62 years on earth, 55 of them as a believer. I rated this high because of his humble attitude about presenting his solid if not a little bit off the beaten track, views about where our hope as believers should truly lie. I participated in a discussion group with friends about the material in this book and loved our time together centered around lively discussions!

I am a fan of N.T. (Tom) Wright. This DVD is very well produced. He is very articulate and clear. Setting is appealing. Easy to follow. One of the best.

This book was for a class but it was difficult to read. I think the author has unique ideas on this subject

I really enjoyed Rustic Modern. I actually purchased the book to get some design ideas for a "someday" house that my wife and I will eventually build......someday! The author does a nice job presenting the blending of what is old and traditional and that which is clearly new and pointed toward the future. As more of a traditionalist, I was surprised at how much I liked the houses and spaces that were included. Of the 16 homes featured, I particularly liked a home from Jackson Hole with barn wood that meets modern design. I could move in tomorrow! Also captivating is the layout of a residence called "Wild Bird" which sits 600 feet above the pacific in Big Sur; a wonderful blend of stone, glass, wood, and the surrounding environment. All of the homes featured are beautiful, some state of the art with all of the bells and whistles, yet all still maintaining an abundance of soul and integrity.With stunning photography and Ms. Ewald's sharp narrative, it is an excellent read. Very glad I purchased Rustic Modern!

I have purchased several books on Japanese Gardening. I am not interested in the gardening style itself. However, I am researching the uses of mosses and lichens in the yard. This book has become my all time favorite gardening book. I learned about the history of a nation, it's people and it's gardens, and how they all intertwine to make the garden what it is today.The drawings are fascinating, and the photographs are beautiful while being perfectly in line with the text. The use of plants, stones and rocks, sand and water within the confining borders of a property are all completely covered in a logical, thoroughly interesting format.For me, the combination of diagrams, photographs and intelligent historical documentation made this book perfect. The discussions of planting materials and arrangements were clear and concise. Although I don't plan on creating a Japanese Garden I understand how it was done in ancient times and how it is done today. I will reread this book many, many times.

I've been reading a lot about Japanese gardens, but I am certainly still very much an amateur and a newbie. That said I think this book was the most informative and the most helpful to date in terms of understanding what it is that appeals to me about the gardens in Japan. I could never hope to recreate such a place where I live, but I can begin to see how I might have similar appeal and sensations in my own garden. And in a very interesting and palatable way, I learned much about Japanese history that I probably would not have paid attention to in any other context. This is a book I am happy to own and I know I will reread it many times over the years to come, though of course there are opposing views and I will try to learn about those as well.

This beautifully illustrated book provides a great introduction to the historical styles of Japanese gardens. For those who are interested in planting a Japanese garden, there are three chapters on design which convey the essential elements of the gardens -- the book encourages us to consider the essence of the garden rather than copy the look of the garden. It was very helpful in designing my Japanese garden.

This is the most serious and complete of the 10 books I own covering Japanese Gardens. Everything is carefully laid out and well written. The photos by Haruzo Ohashi, drawings (by the author), and design by John Einarsen are noteworthy by themselves, but as a whole blend and complement the text perfectly. It ends with an excellent glossary, timeline, and even a plant list. As his drawings clearly show, Marc Peter Keane is a man who looks deeply into nature and design and thinks about what he sees. As a keen gardener and lover of art history, I've visited about 20 gardens in Japan, and this book, more than any other, gives the reader a clear idea of what these gardens feel like, not only a dry description of who did what when and with what materials. This isn't a do it yourself manual for westerners who want to start dropping rocks and spreading gravel in their gardens. Deeper, more difficult questions are answered - like why do these gardens look like they do, and how have they changed over the years. If the gardens he designs are as good as this book, I'd love him to create a garden at Galeazza one day.

I was first introduced to Perfomance Improvement in Grad school. I like the simplicity and the comprehensiveness. Thai book maintains those characteristics but provides a practitioner useful tools and application methodologies that were missing previously.
