Review by Jan Slimming: Bert Lewin's memoir often brought me close to tears. The sheer despair of being separated from ones parents, then not knowing if he would ever see them again, was painful and surely terrifying. His family ripped apart by the Gestapo March 1942 is just one of the stories of Jewish persecution during World War II. This one had me gripped cover to cover and is an eyeopener to the one-sided laws and horrors Jews were subjected to. Lewin's account, though sometimes confused and duplicated, tells of his attempts at survival which relied on friends, luck and coincidences, together with forbidden help from gentiles in Nazi Germany. There's little sunshine in his dark days of living rough in bombed-out Berlin, often with only a blanket and little food, but it is worth reading to the very end, especially for the notes which lead you to discover the fate of the others who were instrumental in his survival. This is the first book I have read on this subject and I already have another lined up. It's by Peter Bein, entitled Maxwell's Suitcase. I suspect it is similar, but each true story is unique..., unfortunately.

I already knew most of what is in this book. I will give it to a newbie friend.

This book has phenomenal pictures of the mushrooms. Unfortunately that's all it has going for it.Here, 128 pages are devoted to only 12 mushroom species. (Not mushroom "types" as is suggested on the rear cover, these are twelve particular species). Surprisingly little space is devoted to content. Consider:- 17 pages are title sheets with section titles, the table of contents, and a blank filler page- 13 pages are devoted to explanation of, and multiple re-hashings, of 8 basic rules of collecting. One page, which begins with the words "Always remember..." is repeated FIVE TIMES. That's five copies of the same one-page reminder, which has also been thoroughly rehashed several times before.The margins are extremely wide and the text is large. The photographs, while impressive, are sometimes accompanied by only one or two sentences per page. Some photographs have no text at all, and a few are repeated at different places in the book either by direct repetition or by Photoshop cropping or bunching.Critical identification techniques (such as spore printing) are completely absent from this book. Identification instructions are so vague as to be almost impossible to use effectively. Although the photographs are outstanding, some of them are repeated to fill space. Mushrooms are seldom shown in the button stage.Shockingly, the poisonous look-alikes are not actually shown. In some cases, key information about poisonous look-alikes is missing. For example, the Jack O' Lantern mushroom (which is identified in SOME field guides as having gills but which can often resemble the false gills or "ridges" of a chanterelle) is found almost exclusively on rotting wood. This so-called guide says that the chanterelle is found on the forest floor, but a key identification component for the mildly poisonous look-alike is omitted. (By "mildly poisonous", I mean an effect serious enough to require hospitalization but not necessarily fatal). The far more dangerous galerina mushrooms, which are also easily mistaken for chanterelles especially the trumpet chanterelles, are not mentioned.The fact that at least some orange-capped boletes are mildly poisonous does not deter the author from recommending the orange birch bolete. Likewise, several blue-bruising and red boletes are toxic. The puffball is shown in cross section (as is appropriate) but the look-alike "Destroying Angel", one bite of which will cause liver failure in an adult, looks almost identical in its immature form. Most responsible authors provide at least a drawing of a baby amanita to show what it looks like before it bursts out of its volva. Immature agarics can also resemble puffballs (although agarics generally aren't quite as toxic as the death cap or destroying angel amanitas, which can and will kill you with one bite).Some of the safety recommendations are overkill: it is not necessary to cook all wild mushrooms for fear they have been contaminated by "dogs". If the mushroom has been soiled by a dog, don't pick it or eat it. Similarly, there is no mushroom so toxic that it is dangerous to touch or to cut with a knife. Instead of overstating the risks of touching the wrong mushroom, the author would have been better advised to at least draw a picture of the deadliest mushrooms in their button form, which is when they are most likely to be confused with edible ones.Expect a lot of baby talk. The term "tummy ache" makes an appearance, as does an extended ramble about Santa Claus near the end of the book. Some of the information about fly agaric is just plain wrong: the fly agaric found in Europe happens to be a different species from North American fly agaric, so the stories about berzerkers and Santa Claus (while amusing) are in reference to the wrong mushroom. Add to this the spelling errors and repetition, and you will see that the book was clearly not peer reviewed or even edited prior to publication. There is no index, and sources are not cited.Note also that the author decided-- on page 102 of 128-- to redefine some basic North American geography. "Eastern North America" is assumed to be primarily north of Georgia, the "Pacific Northwest" is assumed to be Washington, Oregon, and parts of Idaho, and "California" refers to the Bay Area only. The Rocky Mountains and Midwest are completely ignored, as is the entire nation of Canada. This IS NOT A NORTH AMERICAN FIELD GUIDE.This author most likely knows how to take a spore print and what an amatoxin is. Unfortunately he has oversimplified mushroom collection to the point where he is not providing enough identification information to safely identify the twelve desireable mushrooms in the book. This is ironic given the extent to which the author harps on safety.If you want an actual North American field guide, the National Audubon Society is an excellent field guide, and Michael Kuo's "100 Edible Wild Mushrooms" will provide you with far more useful information.

Initially I thought this was a good guide, but after reading through it basically you are mushrooming without fear because you are only learning about mushrooms without gills. Boletes, polypores and Cantharellus species. While this may seem intriguing, please know that there are hundreds of species of Boletes in North America, some of which are poisonous. I'd recommend North American Boletes if you are interested in learning more about them, and I would highly recommend purchasing a field guide for your region for other species. Also be sure to learn how to do a spore print and get involved with your local mycolgical society as well as many mushroom identification Facebook pages.

if your looking to get started in mushrooming ,your walking around the house or in the woods and you have passed by these little gems countless times . . . . .wondering . . . . .than this soft cover book is for you, It does not get carried away with information that we do not need and could care less about. It covers the mushrooms that you are seeing on your walks, colors . . .shapes . . .sizes...beautiful colored pictures and no could have should have and maybes. Book is an easy read for all, and I guarantee your going to add a few extra hours on to that walk of yours.

This is a VERY basic guide if you are just beginning to forage for mushrooms. Very...very basic. I can save you some money...don't pick anything with gills!! This book repeats this over and over...however, we all know that there are many good, edible mushrooms with gills. So, this leaves you wondering how other folks find all of these amazing mushrooms if they aren't taking ones with gills. There is a learning curve with mushrooming. You DO have to be careful what you pick! But this guide really leaves me flat with lack of knowledge...again, VERY BASIC guide.

So I get it.a) Don't pick mushrooms with gillsGOOD GOD. The SAME RULES are repeated OVER AND OVER. I understand the importance of knowing the basic rules for mushrooming, but really, it was a bit over-the-top.This did no good for mushrooming in northern MN. Perhaps in other areas of the country, but not mine. I still had to resort to online pictures to try to distinguish the mushrooms I harvested.

It's literally a rewrite or redo of Schwabs other book..Mushrooming with Confidence. Have both now and it's redundant but pictures are nice and rules are laid out simply for foraging. There are better books out there. Lincoff has the Audubon society field guide..now that's a book.

Excellent book with great pictures, and easy to understand language. The only part I don"t like about the book is they seem to only talk about three areas of the U.S. I am very excited to start mushroom hunting and with this guide, I feel very confident in the mushrooms I will be gathering. This book also goes beyond simply identifying mushrooms, but how to harvest, clean,and even cook the mushrooms.

The posters are beautiful and clear. My only negative comment is: they have right on them the family of instruments they belong in, but they categorize the harp as a percussion instrument. I can live with them calling the piano and organ percussion, but not sure how the harp isn't a string instrument. They also include the conductor. Really nice. I would still recommend them.

Well, the harp (String family)' and the organ,( family) are both under the percussion family in this one. If you need pics of the instruments,all well and good. If you're looking for accuracy,look elsewhere. This is what happens when advertisers get involved in music education.

This books is just a biography about someone without enough experience to write a good one. In spite of the title, it's not about America and a emigre's take on it. It's just about her--a comedian that's not particularly successful. Sadly, other comedians tell us to buy it by writing reviews, because these books are earning money for them. And the reviews for this book, you will note, aren't about the book. They are about Maeve. She's certainly a nicer person than It's a just a biography and not really about America or her take on it. It's just about her--a comedian that's not particularly successful so she decided to write a book. I would say Maeve is a nicer and friendlier person than Amy Poehler--so it's not quite as narcissistic--just not particularly funny or interesting.

I gotta respect any girl who could convince two friends to travel to Iraq for a comedy gig (!) because maybe possibly probably she had a mild crush on the guy who invited her. This delightful series of essays by comedienne Maeve Higgins made me chuckle and made me think. I didn’t realize until afterward that it demonstrated the difficulty and responsibility of lending one’s voice to the disenfranchised, even when the audience is expecting you to be funny. And only funny. The audiobook version is aces.

Maeve tackles some tough topics for present-day America and immigrants. Her insight as an Irish immigrant living in New York City is brilliant. Not only does she tell her stories about her homeland and her new home with brutal honesty, but she relates the stories of those she meets with such great treatment, too.Not all the stories deal directly with immigrants, but since that's her status, it comes across in an indirect manner. And whether she's talking about getting ill while trying to swim with dolphins or working as a babysitter in New York or as a stand-up comic, she lets us in on her adventures, her hopes and dreams and fears with respect. An she does it with the proper dash of humor.

I had never read Maeve Higgins before, but I’m so glad I discovered this book because now I get to go back and read everything she’s ever written. Maeve is a keen observer and an extraordinary writer. This book made me laugh and cry, and I’m still thinking about it days after I’ve finished it. If you have never read Maeve Higgins you need to get you some Maeve Higgins in your life STAT! You’ll be very glad you did. This is by far the best book I’ve read all year.

Maeve HIggins is one of the funniest writers but she makes us think too, sometime sit up in bed think. Compliments Girl on Your Kiss had us all laughing out loud. Are You My Husband explores the cross over from the highness of aloneness to the lowness of loneliness. Maeve is a Philosopher Queen with a witty satirical edge in the best traditions of Wilde and Swift. Give yourself a treat, read this beautiful book!

I've heard Maeve on NPR's Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, and found her words and manner very entertaining. And that was my expectation here. This book did not live up to that. I gave it an extra star because there were a couple of moments inside that I found poignant. There were fewer that were actually funny. It's not a long book, but in the end, it was a chore to get through.

Maeve Higgins is fantastically funny and deadly earnest. She is modern Ireland and what is best about America. She makes me proud of my Irish ancestry, and anxious for more.Maeve is a journalist, an essayist, a comedienne, and 100% female, in the best possible way..If you don't like a particular essay, skip it. But you will go back. I think I will go back again and again.

Higgins is a funny girl. I laughed out loud a number of times during this series of essays. I'll keep an eye out for more from her. Not sure why she would choose to occasionally hop on a pedestal and attach social issues to her otherwise witty narrative (white privilege, really?), but she did. Better for her just to tell stories and make observations and stay away from politics.
