This is a great book, but almost the opposite of what the subtitle promises. I expected to find some interesting applied mathematics to everyday experience. There is none of that, only a few unconvincing lists of pure mathematical results that were later discovered to be useful (quantum and relativistic physics, plus cryptography, feature prominently as always; I call these unconvincing because if you look closely you find the connections between the pure math and the applications are weaker both historically and intellectually than they appear; and in any case this book does not examine them).This book does something much more interesting and original. It discusses pure mathematical results in terms that make the questions reasonable and the answers comprehensible, without the need for either formal mathematical training or painstaking logic. There is also some history and other human interest thrown in.Most mathematics education tends to concentrate on applied mathematics (such as finding the maximum of a quadratic function) or rote versions of pure mathematics (for example, elementary geometric proofs). I personally see little value in either of these. They may ignite a real interest in math for students with high math ability, and they do provide some useful tools that some other students will apply in science or engineering fields, but they leave most students hating math, and little use for what they've learned. Moreover those students who do benefit from the classes will likely have to relearn things properly later.This book seems designed to ignite an interest in mathematics for students without high math ability, or perhaps with high math ability they never realized because they got so bored in class. It naturally introduces important ideas in pure mathematics in ways anyone can appreciate, and explains some of the answers; answers that would require high talent and years of study to derive, but can be explained in general to anyone. It will also interest no-nonsense applied mathematicians in suggesting how some fields of higher mathematics can make complicated or impossible applied problems simple.The book is easy enough to read an understand for an intelligent middle-school student, but will also teach some serious mathematics to nearly all adults who are not professional mathematicians. It's well-written enough to be read for pleasure even without thinking deeply about the math, but also precise enough to get a reader started on important pure mathematics questions that happen to appeal to her (I emphasize "started," the book does not teach the mathematics necessary to answer these questions, only to formulate them and to understand what an answer would consist of; it's not a map, it's just a piece of paper with your location and your goal marked, you'll have to do a lot of study or thinking--probably both--to begin to trace out paths).I recommend this book to anyone who likes recreational mathematics, but there are lots of equally good books for those people. I particularly recommend this book to smart people, children or adults, who don't think they like pure mathematics, but don't know much about it. Some will read this book and confirm their belief that they have no interest in the field, but I think many (most?) will at least understand what pure mathematics is and why it interests other people; and perhaps discover a talent or love for the field in themselves.

David does a fantastic job. I’m not done with the book and will update more once I am. But these two have done something many can’t: Make math interesting and cool. I just hope the general public picks up on it and reads it as well. Math is for everyone. Just everyone hasn’t realized it.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is clear and interesting, reviewing various fields of mathematics with almost no equations. There are few dubious ideas, for example the book presents an alleged solution to Hempel corroboration paradox, but this solution does not meet well-known criticism.

They're on opposing sides, but Verity gives Dominic enough pause to reconsider if his priorities.I also wouldn't be surprised if, unlike her other series, this one branches out to the other people in the family because although we're shown only glimpses of them, they have a lot of potential to shine as brightly as Verity.

I'm torn as to how to rate this...it held my attention reasonably well, I actually laughed out loud a coupla times, there were some original bits....but basically it really was deeply, aggressively, profoundly cornballish fluff. It's fairly fun fluff, but still. There were some cute bits --I love the Aeslin mice, who are deeply religious in that they have incredible memories for trivia & create high holy day celebrations to commemorate such things as "The Renewd Consciousness of the Arboreal Princess" (our heroine waking up), to things like "Okay Dad, I'll take out the garbage" (btw, I'm deeply disappointed in the Kindle "X-ray" function: it had entries for every major & minor character plus such terms as New York & Ace bandage, fa cryin' out loud, but not the mice).There were quite a few clever & fun things, a few surprises, and a lot of totally predictable things (gee, what'll happen when The Covenant hottie shows up.....).This book sorta reminds me of Laurell K Hamilton (back when she wrote books with plots, & things happened other than minutely detailed, squishy sex), if Laurell had sucked down wine coolers (or chain-toked joints) & worn a nitrous oxide mask while she wrote.If you're in the mood for corny, goofy, sometimes original, fluffy brain candy, you could do worse. However, my budget's tight enough that I'll only spring for the sequels if they go down to 2 bucks, or I get a windfall. Or I find an NO cylinder lying around.

Failure to get loose on your own could lead to missing dinner, or worse, being forced to admit that you missed dinner because your baby sister had tied you to the couch. Again.” ****But since her family is in hiding everything growing up served the purpose to teach her how to stay alive in the face of danger just in case she is ambushed by Cryprids or worse a member of the CovenantVerity is actually on a journey to find herself. Currently she is in New York on her own her family has given her a year to decide if she wants to follow in the family business and be a cryptozoologist or follow her other dream of being a professional dancer. Not only are there quotes at the beginning at each chapter that are hilarious but the glimpses we get of Verity’s sister Antimony (see above quote about childhood and being tied up) and her Grandmother who apparently loves to visit hell.“Answer’s ‘no,’ Dave. What would my grandmother say?” Dave paused. “She out of Hell this week?” he asked warily.“Not until Solstice, but still. She wouldn’t understand.”He relaxed. “She’d understand that you needed to save your job.”“I think it’s a little more likely she’d understand that you can kill a bogeyman in a lot of different ways, and come riding in to avenge my honor.”I can’t wait to meet Grandma…she sounds awesome.Verity also has a cryptid cousin Sarah. They aren’t related by blood since Sarah is more like a Giant Wasp who looks like a human. Sarah is also a Mathematician and a telepath who can do some wacky things with your mind. But no worried she got her morals from Battlestar Galactica so I’m sure everyone around her will be fine.And did I mention the forbidden romance…Well I will mention it now then. A man from the Enemy a.k.a. the Covenant is in the city and Verity seems to have sparked his interest or vice versa. Dominic De Luca grew up an orphan in the Covenant and he was not expecting anything like Verity when he came to town. I’m starting to think that they may have been understating things.” “Oh?” I asked, interested despite myself. “What did they say? ” “That you were all insane.” “Ah.” I sat up again, grinning at him. “That’s pretty much true. We’re all crazy. But crazy has its benefits.” “What benefits are those?” he asked warily. “Crazy gets all the knives.”I liked that there is no instalove. It is all lusty and even though Verity knows she should maybe direct those lustful feelings anywhere than in Dominic’s direction he does have a great fighting form and who says a girl can’t take a walk on the wild side every once and awhile.But there is also a plot involving a snake cult and singe women disappearing in the city. It was so much fun that I really didn’t want it to be over and then when it was I was ready to jump into the next book right away.Did I say read this book? Because I don’t think my review did it justice and I’m pretty sure you should just READ THIS BOOK.

There are numerous races of cryptids, both sentient and non. The human-like cryptids live relatively normal lives, and McGuire gives us a lot of great characters with distinct personalities, voices, and species-specific abilities, characteristics, and weaknesses.But what I loved best was the humor. Verity is smart, sassy, and sarcastic. The family quotes at the start of each chapter are priceless (oops, accidental pun!) and the scene labels are witty and fun.I might've gotten this one for free, but I've fallen into the get-the-first-book-free trap and have already paid full price for book 2.

This was a refresher for me of the "Magic" years. We lived in Lansing in the Everett school district during his reign and know the authors. So many wonderful memories. He has remained the loving son and kind soul of his youth. It's the best book for telling the truths of that era, if they wrote it, it happened. It is not a dirt spewing tell all. Read it and smile!

THIS BOOK IS ABOUT THE MSU NCAA CHAMPS OF BASKETBALL IN 1979. LED MY MAGIC, JAY VINCENT, GREG KELSER AND COACH JUD HEATHCOTE THIS TEAM DOMINATED INDIANA STATE TO WIN THE FINAL GAME. THE AUTHORS INTERVIEW ALL THE PLAYERS AND COACHES AND WE GET THEIR INSIGHT INTO THAT SEASON ALONG WITH WHAT THEY ARE DOING TODAY. I AM AN OHIO STATE FAN BUT I REALLY FOUND THIS TO BE VERY WELL WRITTEN AND INTERESTING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL SPARTAN AND COLLEGE HOOP FANS.

Being a die-hard Michigan fan, it's hard for me to admit that I enjoyed anything with the word "Spartans" associated with it. Based on a strong recommendation from a friend of mine, I decided to give this book a chance. I am very glad that I did. It offers a collection of wonderful stories masterfully written by two men who followed this team's every move through the 1978-1979 basketball season. Stabley and Staudt are then able to track nearly every member of the team down 25 years later for their own recollections of what was truly a "Magical" season. A must-read not only for every Spartan fan, but for anyone who appreciates the triumphant nature of the human spirit. I can't wait for the sequel: the story of Rumeal Robinson and the 1989 Michigan Wolverines!

This is NOT the South Beach Diet I know. One recipe calls for two cups of oil to fry something in. What?? That is so far from what SBD is about!! It says this book has meal plans. It has recipes arranged by day. But no snacks listed, healthy or otherwise. No desserts. SBD has both. This book was pricey for what you get. Don't waste your money.

I thought I was buying a South Beach Diet book from the original Dr. This book doesn’t list all the foods for phase 1, doesn’t have a glossary or index to look up the recipes included in the book. NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

We are on the south beach diet and needed extra reference books for variety.
