After losing a prized newspaper job at the Wall Street Journal due to the great downturn of ’09, Cheryl Tan took a year off to return to her native Singapore, and the comfort food of her youth. After meeting with her briefly, I am not surprised that she chose a difficult time to write a book, using her misfortune brilliantly. Reasons for her dexterity become evident once I got to know her family in “A Tiger in the Kitchen.”Although Tan, a capable, goal oriented type ‘A” seamlessly negotiated the transition to America, could she do the same in reverse? Especially when she had largely rejected cooking for family, viewing a life in the kitchen as cut off from the larger world, lacking power. And now, after sixteen years in America, Tan must finally contend with the ladies. She must earn her place in the kitchen.Slowly she learns to abandon the American obsession for precise measurements, formulas and procedures and begins to navigate complex recipes that often exist only in the sharp and exacting memory of one of her aunties. When she asks how much sugar to add or how long the duck should cook, she is often met with the words “agak, agak” loosely translated as “just enough” or “until it is done.’But over time spent with her aunties and mother, in the many hours it takes to properly prepare the cookery that fuses Malay, Indonesian and Chinese roots, Tan begins to see these women more clearly. She claims that although she has encountered tough and capable women in America, including driven CEOs and editors, nobody scared her more than these women in their Singaporan kitchens.Over the course of chopping, peeling, dicing and boiling, stories begin to unfold, as appetizing as the dishes themselves. Memories are offered up that would never have surfaced otherwise. Divorce, opium addiction, love and abandonment, the stuff that families are made of are handed to Tan as a gift for genuinely participating in the family legacy.Although I am not ordinarily fond of memoir cookery books, this one masterfully segues from kitchen to chronicle with natural cadence. I feel that I know these characters, the aunts and uncles, father and mother and grandmother on their own terms, gradually coming to understand them so well that when I actually attempted her recipe for Mandoo (a Chinese dumpling), I felt many eyes upon me, looking over my shoulder, silently letting me know that I could be quicker, the pleats in the dumplings neater, it could have used less filling to be tidy. But at the same time, I am convinced that they want me only to do my best. And somehow I really want to please them!“Tiger,” as the book is affectionately known, is both a frothy cocktail and a delicate family tale, that shifts from continent to continent, past to present and culture to culture with an intuitive grasp of the precise moment to move on. Tan’s journalism background comes to the fore with clear detailed writing to bring us to a tempting table laden with exotic treats. Unlike many family tales, it neither veers into an overly sentimental journey or a hard-nosed dissection of the shortcomings of either culture.And by the way, the Mandoo was delicious.

Tan manages to capture so many aspects of Singaporean life. The food, the rapid pace of change, the importance of family and cultural tradition, the special nature of the Chinese heritage in Singapore and much more. She writes in an engaging style, providing just the right amount of background history. It is also true that I enjoyed the book the second time thru after having lived in Singapore long enough to get a feel for the fabric of the city!

I loved Cheryl Tan's memoir about cooking and family -- and about how the two inevitably intersect. This beautifully-structured book alternates between her life in Manhattan and her family in Singapore; it's insightful and often laugh-out-loud funny (you'll never look at cinnamon rolls in quite the same way, and I also loved the moment when she had to risk e.coli to make her grandmother happy by sampling uncooked meat - nobody ever said family recipes had to be FDA-approved). The only thing that would make this book better would be an interactive edition where you could click on a dish and have it delivered to your door. Until that happy day, Tan's wonderfully evocative writing will be the next best thing.

It's packed full of examples, checklists, things to consider, ways to realistically discuss these issues with kids or with caregivers.It gives advice to administrators of organizations that interface with children including concrete materials to include in training and handbooks.It gives advice about identifying personal boundaries, communicating boundaries to children while recognizing their increasing need for independence, ways to talk with babysitters about safety rules, and above-all ways to spot our own obstacles to putting child (or our own!) safety into priority above personal embarrassment or other issues. But at the same time, the authors recognize those internal and external obstacles, and provide concrete ways to handle them.This book doesn't identify an issue and leave you figuring out how to solve it, it's got the material you need, and pointers to other groups and resources to dig even deeper. This is a great book for anyone interested in personal protection or self-defense, even though it's directed to child-safety.If you're a teacher, leader, minister, parent, or just a human living in a complicated world, this is good stuff. The examples are engaging and real, and the suggestions are do-able. There's no gap here between any idea and how to implement it. In the decades I've trained and taught martial arts and women's and teen self-defense, I've read a lot of what this genre has to offer. This book is an incredible resource for anyone who wants to help the kids in their lives keep themselves safe and move confidently through childhood and adolescence into adulthood. They strike a balance between keeping kids safe and also allowing kids freedom to take chances and learn how to be themselves in the world. It's so easy to be overwhelmed by the challenges our kids might face and the scary stories all around us. Doing Right by Our Kids focuses on what we CAN do, and how we can help kids build skills. Doing Right by Our Kids not only presents concise, usable information and education on safety skills for kids, but presents an action plan to help implement the skills. As a pediatrician, I have referred my patients to the Kidpower website, but now plan to also refer my patients to this book. The information presented will help parents work with their children on essential age appropriate safety skills as well as help parents advocate with schools, sports teams, and other caring adults to keep their kids safe. I particularly like that parents can learn to practice the skills with children in an an age-appropriate way that is positive. The action plans at the end of the chapters are so helpful to review what is covered in each chapter and how I can put the skills to use right away. I particularly like the information on advocating within the school system to decrease bullying and to better support our kids at school. Excellent book!

I am not a parent myself yet, but I do have children in my life who I care about. I want them to enjoy being curious in the world and learning from myriad experiences throughout their lives. Amy Tiemann and Irene van der Zande provide stories and concrete, useful tools for how to make this world safer for our kids so they can participate in school, on sports teams, at camp, in places of worship, at home, out in the world, and even in college with independence and confidence. Thank you for such a comprehensive and practical resource for parents, caregivers, coaches, educators and everyone who cares about the safety of children (and adults)!

Doing Right by Our Kids gives parents and caregivers simple skills to teach kids about personal safety. It is a valuable tool to use to practice these skills. When I read this book, I thought "this is so important and so simple!". I started practicing these skills with my young children and I found that I learned as much for myself as for the kids in my life. I can and do use these skills at an adult!

I really enjoyed the Safety Check up's at the end of each chapter to review what was covered. I was relieved to see all the tools and skills provided throughout the book after each problem or concern about safety was discussed. I really liked the section, "Replacing Denial, Fear and Panic with Preparation, Skills and Prevention"

I was fortunate enough to be given an advanced reader copy of “Doing Right by Our Kids: Protecting Child Safety at All Levels.” As a mom and a martial arts school owner, this book resonated with me on so many levels. A lot of information out there can feel very fear mongering, but this book provides valuable information in a very practical way, considering all sides of the conversation. It showed me some areas where I think I am really doing a good job and others where I can improve, and has provided me with the tools to be a confident advocate for my child. The personal examples given by the authors were so helpful, and have given me a blueprint on how to gracefully handle tough conversations with empathy and respect while standing your ground. Whether you are a parent, an educator, a business owner, or someone looking to be more informed, this book is a must read.

The legendary Tahl Leibovitz, who began playing the sport as a teenager at the Queens Boys and Girls Club and became a Paralympic gold medalist, shares the secrets of his extraordinary success as an elite table tennis player. Think Yoda, Socrates and Yogi Berra rolled into one. The book combines practical advice on technical skill development with insightful wisdom on tactics, strategy and mental toughness. A few sections I found particularly helpful were “Your Past Doesn’t Determine your Future,” “Scouting Out your Opponents,” “The Fight Against Ourselves,” and “Advice from Champions.” I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in raising their table tennis game to a higher level.

I have watched Tahl play, as well as listened to him analyze his game (and that of others) over a number of years. He knows the game, and himself, very well: what works and what doesn't in most any given situation. This kind of a book has been long awaited for and Tahl is just the guy to do it justice. Everything is considered here--strategy, mental toughness, technique, attitude. It's a wonder Tahl can fit so much training into a hundred and some pages. This is an insightful and powerful book appropriate for anyone who has played, do play, or will play, the sport of ping pong.

It is a short book with solid tips for any competitive player.

I was disappointed at how short of a book this is. While there are some decent guidelines within and it addresses more of the mental game than the technical, it is light in reading material and generalized in suggestions. I think I read the whole thing in an hour. The pages are double spaced to bring it to 124 pages or so (I don't recall how many exactly without looking, but it was not much) so in reality this "book" is only about 60 pages of written material in my opinion. Not worth $10. I purchased it based on previous reviews, but none of the previous reviews mentioned the lack of content unfortunately.
