This book is by a machine learning expert. He in interested in models of learning and particularly their assessment in terms of computational complexity theory. It considers seriously the role of evolution itself in the context of knowledge acquisition processes. The book argues that evolution is a subset of learning processes.Overall, the book is a reasonable one. However, the presentation is a bit dry and boring. The author apparently likes coining terms, and dislikes reviewing the work of others. As Leslie says, there is indeed a close link between the theories of evolution and learning. He correctly argues against the modern dogma of directionless evolution (since evolution and learning are linked and learning is clearly directional). Leslie argues that "fitness" provides such a direction. In fact a much stronger case than the one Leslie gives can be made - based on thermodynamics.Overall, I am inclined to think that the book has its core thesis backwards. Instead of evolution being a subset of learning processes, learning processes are part of evolution. Most of the rest of this review focuses on this one point, because I think it is an important one.The idea that learning is a part of evolution is an old one. James Mark Baldwin proposed that organisms could learn a behavioural trait and then see genetic predispositions to learning that behaviour amplified by evolution. This idea was later generalised by Waddington - who proposed that genes could take over the trait completely - via a process known as "genetic assimilation". We see this effect in modern times, with learned milk drinking preceding genetically encoded lactose tolerance. Overall, the course of evolution is altered significantly by individual and social learning processes.Leslie says that "The idea that evolution is a form of learning sounds implausible to many people when they first hear it." I think this is because he has things backwards - and learning is better seen as one of the products of evolution. How does Leslie argue that evolution is part of learning - and not the other way around? Leslie confines his attention to the case of "Darwinian evolution". According to Leslie, this term refers to evolution without learning. Leslie asserts that, in Darwinian evolution, genetic variations are generated independently of current experiences - a constraint that does not apply to learning systems. Unfortunately for Leslie's thesis, this isn't the kind of evolution that Darwin believed in. Darwin was well aware of the role of learning in evolution. Indeed he formulated a theory to explain how current experiences went on to affect the next generation. Darwin's proposed "gemmules" were subsequently discredited, but they clearly show that Darwin thought that current experiences influenced heritable variation.Leslie goes on to describe modern cultural evolution, saying that "culture also undergoes change or evolution, but this change is no longer limited by Darwinian principles". However, Darwin was, in fact, a pioneer in the discovery of cultural evolution, writing about how words and languages were subject to natural selection. Leslie argues that human culture introduced learning to evolution. He minimizes the significance of cultural inheritance in other animals and the influence of individual learning on DNA evolution via the Baldwin effect and genetic assimilation. He says that before human culture: "the learning and reasoning carried out by an organism during its life had limited impact that outlived the individual". I think this is a big understatement that is not really consistent with the scientific evidence on the role of learning in evolution. Learning is important, and it's impact on evolution long pre-dates human cultural evolution.The "Darwinian evolution" described by the author would have been foreign to Darwin. Also, we know that the idea that genetic variations are generated independently of current experiences is wrong - not least because of the role of stress in stimulating the production of mutations. This it isn't the kind of evolutionary theory that is much use for explaining what happens in nature. Why Leslie focuses on this impoverished version of evolutionary theory is not completely clear. Perhaps he really believes that this is what Darwinian evolutionary theory says. Or perhaps making Darwinism look weak makes his own field of learning seem more important.So far, this has been mostly an argument over terminology - specifically over what the term "Darwinian evolution" refers to. This debate has limited interest - and can mostly be avoided with clear definitions. However the problem with learning theorists placing learning centrally and denigrating the power of Darwinian evolution, is that they then fail to make proper use of the insights evolutionary theory provides. In fact, Darwinism has much to say about how the brain processes responsible for animal learning work. Natural selection acts on synapses. Axon pulses are copied with variation and selection. There's competition between ideas within the brain for attention. The result is a good adaptive fit between an organism's model of its world and its environment. Interesting though these idea are, you won't find anything like them in this book. Indeed, few machine learning experts appear to have looked into the implications of modern versions of Darwinism. Instead, Leslie sees Darwinian evolution as a primitive ladder that led to modern learning systems. He doesn't deal with the more powerful, generalized versions of evolutionary theory that also cover organisms that learn or make use of cultural transmission.

Readers with more background in learning theory and artificial intelligence can still appreciate the book even though the rigorous formalism has been omitted in order to appeal to a wider audience.Whatever the eventual impact this book has on evolutionary biology it raises issues that should be addressed when contemplating the Darwinian paradigm, and beyond that it addresses requirements that every algorithm developer confronts in everyday practice. These involve the running time of algorithms designed for practical use, the data needed for these algorithms that can frequently be corrupted or sparse, and the overhead generated by the algorithm, especially those deployed on information networks.

My cousin told me about this book because i was away from home and could not cook any of the delicious Haitian food my mom would make. i mean i was missing- legume with rice.. and so much more. Now i can cook and my black American husband love eating Haitian food. I showed my mom this book and she can cook and there were some meals she hadn't tasted since she was a child. This a good gift to any Haitian or those that are not Haitian and love eating the food.

I have heard that some people may think that $49 dollars is too high, but I've paid higher prices for college textbooks that I did not appreciate as much.I've purchased all three of the Haitian cookbooks that are currently on the market and I love having all three. My mom is an excellent Haitian cook, but I have only recently began my journey at learning the unique style of Haitian cooking. I like to compare some of the technique I've recently learned from my mom, to those included in the book. Also my mom doesn't cook anywhere close to as many recipes as those include in the book. I love my mom's Soup Joumou, but I like that the book has other options.It's worth the money- especially since it is so unique.

After a recent trip to Haiti, my daughter and I absolutely fell in love with the country and the cuisine! This cookbook has become a family favorite as it's very complete, easy-to-follow instructions and even includes a lot of cultural information.

this is book was a fine example for haitian cooking there were pictures of the food being presented for some of the meals being prepared so that you can get a hint on how the dish should look like.its in detail about whats to be done next. the only thing i didnt like about it was the price i gotta admit the price is above the average cookbook.but in the end its well worth the dollars spent.

Wonderful Book! I am a Haitian American and the book gave so many wonderful recipes! Many new things to try! My Haitian husband, who was born in Haiti has loved all the meals I have prepared with these recipes! I know some people said their book was falling apart, mines has been perfectly fine.

I got this for my daughter, so I didn't make any of the recipes, but she was thrilled to receive it!

I returned the book , i don't even use it, from $45.50 she only give $22 back the book is not good . I don't recommend her .

I haven't read any of the previous reviews, but I will contribute my thoughts on Marty Appel's 574 page text in addition to photos, appendix, bibliography, and index that he has put together. There have been many books written about the Bronx Bombers, but I feel Marty Appel's effort covering the entire history of the team from its beginnings in 1902 when Bill Devery and Frank Farrell purchased the Baltimore franchise and moved it to New York and played at Hilltop Park through Yankee Stadium II and the 2011 season is the ultimate book on the team's history. In addition for several of those years Marty has been there as an employee of the team and he was there to see first-hand what too place. Marty does not take sides one way or another regarding players, manager, or owners, but presents the team's history as he found it in his research.What I especially like about the book are the numerous anecdotes about the managers, players, and owners. You may think you have heard all of the stories regarding the Yankees, but I came across several I have never heard before. Marty asked clubhouse man Pete Sheehy, "Tell me about the Babe." Instead of giving Marty a lengthy story or two about Ruth, Sheehy's five word reply was a classic. One thing in particular I like about the book is what it doesn't give us. We are not "treated" to numerous game-by-game details about how runs were scored. I find this to be very tiring in books. I repeat. I did not find this to be the case in this book.I did find two errors in the book in addition to a spelling error and a word usage error. I will point them out, not to be critical, but in case the author wishes to make the changes in the paperback edition. On page 223 Lou Gehrig's death is listed as June 3rd of 1941 when the date should be June 2nd instead. On page 235 the year the St. Louis Browns moved to Baltimore is listed as 1953 when the correct year should be 1954. On page 340 approximately one-fourth of the way down the page the word pastime is incorrectly spelled as "passtime." And finally near the bottom of page 456 the word "used" is incorrectly used instead of "using." Again, I point these errors out, not to be critical, but if the author wishes to make changes in the paperback edition.The book contains two sections of photos, both color and black and white which amply includes all parts of the team's history. Several of these photos I have never seen before.Whether you are a Yankee hater, Yankee lover, and just a fan interested in baseball history Marty Appel has given us an outstanding history of one of the game's greatest franchises. If you claim to be a baseball fan then you need this book in your library.

Fantastic book! Marty avoids boring baseball fans with the old and worn out stories (he does briefly mention them). There are so many interesting things he brings up that fall into the "Wow! I never knew that before!" category. Great for all Yankee fans, but I think all baseball fans will still enjoy this a lot. Do you know how the Yankees got their name or where Wally Pipp was when Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak ended? Get the book and find out!

As good a great classic book as you will ever read, on the inception of the NY Highlanders/Yankees, the inception of the American League, in an Era, when corrupt Mayors, Police Chiefs, Baseball Team owners, and Politicians, of every walk of life. The men who ran the metropolis cities, in such a time, were more often than not, corrupt, con-men, scam artist, illegal gambling parlors, bordellos, bookies, and other corrupt mob-like men, who made their living by destroying the lives of others. The men in NYC who ran the metropolis through The infamous Tammany Club, a who's who of power brokers in charge of NYC affairs, from where the sub-ways were to be built, train tracks, parks, land barons. These are the men, who almost got away with destroying the credibility of the NY Highlanders owner, and AL President and Founder, Ban Johnson. Against all odds, when Johnson was the owner of the Baltimore Orioles. The NY Giants owner, Freedman, bought the majority stock in the Orioles under Johnson's nose, then proceeded to stock his NY Giants Team with its star players. John McGraw being the major player. After Freedman's bold move to create a Oriole's team in decline by selling off its key players after the majority stock buyout of the Oriole's, Freedman then proceeded to buy all the available land in NY City with his cronies who ran the Tammany Club of NYC.Such attempts to block the move of the Orioles to NY, and desecrate the new found American League (AL), this story is one, that cannot be put down from the readers eyes. It is that impacting and stunning. I thought I knew the basics of the rich yankee history, until I read this book, and the book "Yankee Century" both comparable books, with different eyewitness accounts, journal entries, newspaper articles of different stories, both books are comparable classics, and must reads, for any self discerning Yankee or MLB fan.

Boy, howdy. Did I ever ENJOY this tome. I have been a New York Yankee fan for 50 years. I thought I knew a lot. I thought I had heard most of it. Was I wrong. This is an interesting, informative, fun, touching, celebration of everything Yankee. I foresee myself reading this again and again every five years or so. It is well-written, brilliantly edited, and although if the subject matter had been handled even a bit differently it would have become encyclopedic, fortunately, it is handled with love and respect. You get it all. The good, the bad, the events, the personalities, and occasionally some mild editorializing. A totally wonderful edition to any Yankee lover's library. I didn't want it to end. The most relaxed and enjoyable 500+ pages I have read in quite some time. Are you a fan of the greatest baseball franchise ever? You must, I repeat, MUST own this book. NOW.

Oh man, this book is the one you don't want to end. Marty knows Yankees but expands to include the history of baseball development. (I often note segments of people and places to bring up to my 81 year old neighbor from the Bronx.) Between the covers lays out memories of events both local and global - "where were you when" - ?!?! The chronology is well noted and so easy to follow. My tie in started in the '50s and reminds me of a life often balanced knowing baseball was a constant. Reading with my NY cap on just adds to the flavor of a delicious book!

This was a decent intro to Islamic history from a Western historian's point of view. Most books about Islam that are written by Western scholars tend to be overly critical (in my opinion). Generally I prefer to read an anthropologist's take on Islamic issues if I'm to read a piece written from a non-Muslim, simply because they are less biased. I took a chance with this one, and found it to still be pretty good.

Silverstein's monograph is a fairly quick read, and well worth the effort. The history is rather sparse, as the title implies, but it makes a nice companion to something more detailed like Berkey's "The Formation of Islam." Well-written throughout, value comes particularly in the analysis and insight developed in the later chapters and conclusion, though some may find it "controversial." Highly recommended.

The Book is so easy to understand and provides a wonderful gateway into the importance and history of Islamic religion and society. By giving historical background, the author clarifies the reasons and meanings behind 20th and 21st century events. There are many maps, photos, and short excerpts included in the book so readers can easily understand what the author is explaining.

Appreciated what I learned, the quality of the writing, the nature of the analysis. Realize that it is a "short introduction" but felt that I got a very good overview. Excellent read. Thank you.

This book is valuable not only for a historical overview of Islamic tradition, but for the insightful last chapter on current Islam and world perception of it. This book is respectful of the religion while being forthright about some of the less pretty parts of its history. The style of the book is very accessible... some scholars may say it is too broad and not deep enough, but it met my needs... I may want to read a multi-volume work in Islam in the future, but not this weekend.

Silverstein, an Oxford professor, writes with the clarity and simplicity that I would love to emulate. His exquisite style makes reading this complex history much easier than it might be in less capable hands. As for the accuracy of his historical account, I have no basis for judgment. Nevertheless, I would recommend this slight volume to anyone seeking a brief introduction to Islam. A good counterweight and a book I highly recommend is Timothy Gianotti's "In the Light of a Blessed Tree: Illuminations of Islamic Belief, Practice, and History," another wonderfully clear and incisive brief study of Islam, written by a former Catholic, now a Muslim. Gianotti's book includes autobiographical information describing how he came to Islam.

Most people are surprised that I am reading a book on Islam written by a westerner, that too, being a Muslim myself. But this is a very honest summary of the cultural and historical impact and importance of Islam. Its a very honest assessment and it got me hooked on Islamic history so much that I couldnt stop browsing the net for two weeks, scouring for more info. Very informative and provides several arguments and counter arguments, so that you can decide for yourself.

It's sometimes a difficult slog, but that's because the history of Islam is long and very convoluted. It's necessary reading for those who wish to have a deeper understanding of Islam. He proves points throughout the book then sums them up at the end. Clear and as concise as can be to do justice to a history most westerners have almost no knowledge of.

We completed the Alta Via I trek, relying primarily on this book's Alta Via I directions and on online maps we downloaded independently. The book was helpful for getting a sense of the general route. However, if you've used the Tour du Mont Blanc guide by the same publisher (Cicerone), you might be surprised by how much less detailed the trek information is in this book. The TMB guide had detailed trail directions, with all elevation gains and losses, and it listed, mapped or described all forks and intersections. In the Dolomites book many intersections were simply not listed or described. I think that the book would benefit substantially from mapping the trails that intersect with the AV route. If we had not had supplemental trail maps, it would have been impossible to follow the book's directions. The elevation information provided was also misleading. For example, one of the Alta Via sections was described as a "very easygoing day," and based on the various elevations provided along the route, one would infer only gross total elevation gains/losses of about 50-100m. However, the gross elevation changes that day were about 1400m (700m up and back down again) that day -- not impossible, but hardly "easygoing." We found that hiking time estimates were also quite inconsistent. If you used and loved the TMB guide published by Cicerone, don't expect the same from the Dolomites guide.

My wife and I used this Exceptional book to hike the Alta Via 1 route across the Dolomites in August, 2013. We did not buy or need any additional maps or books. Gillian Price provides enough information information to plan your route ahead of time and to easily find the trail each day without taking away the discovery and adventure by giving too much detail.As the book mentions, you will need to bring cash (in Euro) to pay for food and lodging at the Rifugios (huts). If you need to exchange money, the best exchange rate in Italy (by far) is at the post office. We saved over a hundred Euro by exchanging U.S. dollars at the main post office in Venice (ask your hotel for directions).The following update might help hikers who want to do the via ferrata variant described at the end of Alta Via 1 but do not want to carry a climbing harness for eight days. The author mentions that the alpine guide at Refugio 7 Alpini can provide via ferrata kit and expert accompaniment. That guide is no longer working. However, you can rent via ferrata kit from the alpine guide at Refugio San Sebastiano (passed in Stage 9) and drop it off at the end of the trip in Belluno.If you are trying to decide whether to hike in the Dolomites, we highly recommend them. We have backpacked around the world (including impressive ranges in the Rockies, Sierras, Patagonia, Bolivia, Russia, and Central Asia) and we found the Dolomites to repeatedly offer some of the most spectacular vistas we have seen.

I am in the midst of planning a trek along Alta Via 2. I agonized briefly over what book to buy, and ended up landing on Trekking in the Dolomites. I have certainly not been disappointed. The information in the book is very helpful. There have been some inaccuracies with regard to the open/close dates for some of the Rifugios, and I have spent a good deal of time online making more detailed plans, but the book has been invaluable to me.A few details:The maps that are provided are ample for low-level planning, but I suspect some additional, larger maps will be needed to accurately navigate the trails.The book is not particularly great about letting you know about some important details: do you need to arrive by a certain time for meals to be served (some rifugio require this, others don't)? Is water available along the trail?There are frequent callouts in the book, but they don't seem to call out the components of the hike that are most important to a traveler. You need to read through each of the "chapters" to get the details necessary for planning.This is absolutely a helpful resource, but there are a few drawbacks. I recommend visiting some websites in conjunction with the book when planning your trip. I am going in early October and will certainly update my review if there are any other significant discrepancies. Nevertheless, if you are trekking AV, you should probably buy this now.

The book is nicely written but the level of details given for each stage and description of the trek is lacing. I was missing details on long/hard climes, long descents, boulders and ferratas. In addition some pointers on places the trek is not well shown would have helped. I was expecting something in the line of an older book from trailblazer I have use in the passed when walking in the dolomites.

Good review of the most common routes in the Dolomites that tend to be crowded. Other routes are out there with a little internet research. Plan ahead, the Refugios book up early. But some stunning country though don't expect a USA style back-country experience though.

Using this guidebook for the whole AV2 route makes clear that it's pretty good. The advice on alternate routes was particularly welcome.You really see its value when you head into an area with less information available.The maps are so-so; that is unfortunately the usual for Ciccerone.

Convenient backpack size. Appears to be a useful guide, but I have to actually use it on the trail to determine accuracy and adequacy. Nice photos. No topographic maps, only schematics. For the price, I would have preferred that it included some actual topos. No GPS coordinates. No leg-to-leg breakdown of distances.

Trails are for climbing and heavy duty trekking. If you are walking or regular hiking, buy the walking book.

This publication is a joke. Someone downloaded Kafka's (out of copyright) work, put it into Microsoft Word - chose the smallest, most obnoxious sans serif font to save paper and sold it through Amazon. It's completely illegible. Pay a little more for a legitimate copy and enjoy this great work.

Kafka's The Trial is a tough book to read, perhaps because so much of what he wrote about seems plausible today. Secret decisions in which the primary person is not informed (think about some of the digital monitoring that goes on), trials that are unaccessible, and the insidious effect on one's social circles where the shadow of a trial quickly becomes known among many, but there is no recourse or ability to deny anything. And yet, with a modern eye, I also saw so many instances of Josef K's own arrogance and blindness to his own shortcomings. He makes speeches when he might have the chance to listen. He sexually assaults (kissing her extensively without her permission) a young woman in the same boarding house and then is clueless about why she's avoiding him. And when the two officers who originally arrested him are being beaten in a room in his Bank building, he does not try to assist them by calling to someone else but appears to simply hope that they are not heard by anyone else in the building. And yet his reactions are understandable, and perhaps quite typical even today of how someone might act. It's a scary book, not because of any fantastic monsters, but because of the way a government with no accountability can corrupt all citizens under fear and secrecy.

This story, as it is a novella and not a novel, approaches its theme not by havong its prltagonist change as a result of the content, instead having us strongly empathize with the protagonist. Its a bit of an old fashioned style but still has its impact. Gregor is transformed into a giant insect(vermin)and we follow his intensifying alienation from his family. Its true lonliness as hes unable to communicate wkth a family that is repulsed by him. Gregor maintains his intelligence, and remaina aware ofthe burden he places on them.There is also some social commentary. The loss of the sons income sends the family in dissarray,so much so that a family working cant compensate. In a particular theres a scene where three men threaten to sue the family. Surreal in its presentation, metamophosis is a real gem of a story. Great enough to have earned its place in 20th century literature as a classic.

This book is an abrupt short story that is engaging from start to finish. The story is surreal yet the main character Gregor is completely relatable. The story starts out as funny, but grows sadder and sadder until the ending, which admittedly is strange enough to be the ending of a Sundance film. Honestly, if this book had come out a few years later it could've been an artistic surrealist cartoon. This is one of those speculative frictions that doesn't actually explain why something is happening, only that it is. Franz Kafka explains how turning into a roach would affect Gregor in a way that is understandable, sympathetic, yet well researched. It feels like the story is an allegory for something, yet is so dedicated to its premise that it's difficult to say what the allegory is. Overall, I would recommend this story for those that like the modern abrupt method of storytelling, who like strangeness, and who like to cry. Seriously, this one is depressing despite it's moments of levity.

This is a well-translated, very portable version of a truly extraordinary book. If you're looking for the most affordable version of The Metamorphosis, this is the best fit I've found! It's clear and engaging, and has slightly simpler vocabulary than many. This means it would be great for a classroom setting or as a gift for a younger reader, a current English learner, or anyone who doesn't enjoy being sent to the dictionary when they're trying to enjoy a book. The story itself is fresh as ever--while this isn't personally my favorite of Kafka's work, I love the absurdism and the economy of language that he employs within it! I was very pleased with the binding quality as well, and there are several amusing graphics inside the book that made it just that bit more fun to read. The biggest selling point for me personally was the size-- I'm a pack rat, so it is often difficult to find books that will fit wherever I need them to. This has made a wonderful addition to my commute this week, for the price of a Starbucks order or a single decent sock. You can't go wrong!

This was a very unique read! I enjoyed it very much. I decided to actually listen to the audio version after I read it, just to see if I would “rethink” my opinions and thoughts about the book. Then, I was so intrigued, I did some internet searches and started reading about other interpretations readers have made. I couldn’t get enough, I even went so far as to YouTube videos and feature length films dedicated to this short tale! Those proved to be quite interesting and entertaining. I would definitely recommend this book!

There is a reason why Franz Kafka is still recognized as one of the greatest authors of the last century, and The Metamorphosis is just one of many examples. As Gregor Samsa famously awakens to find himself transformed into a large insect, this brief novella explores the complicated aspects of identity, alienation, and the complex nature of both familial and societal relationship to such an extent that it is still considered one of the great existentialist masterpieces. There's nothing I can say here that hasn't been said in countless volumes by thousands of critics and scholars, except for my personal opinion that this is a deeply resonating work that still relevant despite being published over a hundred years ago.

Received a bootlegged copy of the book. Literally copied from a free digital version. It even has the pages claiming it is a free digital book printed and included in the back.Aside from that, the print is so small, even a magnifying glass would not make one capable of reading the poorly printed words.

There are a very few books about the natural heritage of the desert lands of Egypt, Jordan and Israel. This book attempts to capture visuals of the desert areas in the three countries with basic emphasis on Sinai. The book is split into chapters according to geographical locations of the areas photographed, and Sinai is given a chapter alone (it should be noted that Sinai is part of Egypt). The photos were an effort done in the seventies-eighties and therefore remain unspoiled by the modern resort developments popping up in and around the coasts of the Red Sea and the Sinai Peninsula. A photographer myself, and having been in many of the areas displayed in the book, the pictures taken for Mount Moses and Saint Catherine monetary in Sinai are some of the best I have seen published. The book is largely a personal experience, and is provided in a narrative fashion. The one thing I found annoying about this was that the photos are provided without captions, if you want to know where each photo was taken you have to look at the photo index at the end of each chapter. After a while this becomes a tiring task especially if you want to peruse the photos without reading the text. This however doesn't stop the book from being nice in look and design. Get this book if you have been to these desert areas or plan to go there, it is nice pictorial account of the beauty of the desert. However, if you are scientifically interested in a descriptive account of their natural features and characteristics this book will be of little help, it is also of little aid as a travel companion. For me, it was worth the buy for the nice photos. If you are looking for some hardcore scientific information about the natural heritage of Sinai with beautiful professionally taken photos you are better off with another highly pictorial book, "the Natural Heritage of Egypt", published by the Tourism Development Authority in Egypt and authored by a professional photographer Rafik Khalil. The photos are extraordinarily and rare with good solid scientific explanations.

This is a rich diet of unusually beautiful pictures; a collection of vivid scenes. You feel like you're there... You'll wish that you were there! Ah, but Folberg's eye is even better than yours or mine. Open up (pun intended) and let him teach you how to see.
