The storyline and plot was good. I didn't like the language, it wasn't necessary. For that reason I will not be reading the other books in the series.
I really enjoyed Mr. Pierce's previous books, especially the Tracy Crosswhite series, so I expected that same quality to this book. It wasn't really here. So, you can call this a mystery: there were bodies, death, suspects, crime scenes, and detectives. But there was no procedure. There were no real conversations with neighbors (just the exact one needed to solve the case), no sign of real autopsies or blood testing (again only convenient ones), and no red herrings to tantalize the reader. Hence, mystery-lite, not full-bodied.Here's what I wrote early following the discovery of the first murder:I'm not an expert on crimes, but Julie was murdered and buried in four days. Isn't there usually an autopsy done to determine if there were drugs or alcohol in a murder victim? And doesn't that usually take time, like weeks? How was Julie buried in four days?Won't give up on Mr. Pierce, but not going to be an automatic pick for me again.
I have read all of Blake Pierces books that are on Amazon and this was the first one I’m not sure about. The beginning of the book rambled a bit and didn’t seem to have a flow or character development that I’ve come to expect from Pierce stories. It almost felt like the beginning was either written by someone else or just wasn’t edited properly. The end of the story brought it all together for me and felt much more like what I’ve come to expect from this author. I like the idea of Kate as a main character but I’d Love to see her action and interaction with other characters to develop the story rather than so much of her inside voice describing who she is. I am looking forward to what Blake Pierce publishes next though. The suspense and outcomes are always interesting.
Mostly our book heroes are young, 40’s at the most. I paused over reading a storyline with a retired FBI Agent. How much fun could that be? Well, I’m not sorry I gave it a try. 55-year-old Kate Wise doesn’t know what to do with herself. She has one daughter and no hobbies. Retiring after her husband was murdered seemed like the thing to do....although the author doesn’t really explain why Kate retired. Whatever. Kate is asked to look into a murder of a friend’s daughter. She doesn’t become a PI, which is refreshing. She talks of FBI procedures and rules, which is also refreshing. She was some kind of STAR as an Agent for her abilities. I’m not telling you how or if she gets around the rules, but we are introduced to a young female STAR Agent. Also, there are some surprises associated with her daughter that are fun.Twice Kate and another character made judgemental assumptions about 2 other characters that were not justified by the characters actions, I felt. It grabbed my attention, though. It made me think of Kate as more of a tough Agent, not so much a homebody or motherly type. I like that Kate has musings about dating and sex. She is wondering about seeing someone again, even though there “wasn’t perfect chemistry between themâ€. For an investigative FBI procedural this is pretty good! I’m looking forward to reading more of this series.
Kate Wise, a 55 year old former FBI agent, is coaxed out of retirement when her friend's daughter is murdered. While an interesting story, I was distracted by proofing errors. The super woman FBI grandmother was a stretch but it was an entertaining plot.
I am a Blake Pierce junkie, having followed all of his series.I never even try to figure out the killer, just go along for the ride and am never disappointed. I love Kate Wise, she's a woman of a certain age, and clearly not ready to retire from the FBI- 55 is the new 35! Whether it's beating up a man half her age and twice her weight (OK she goaded him into attacking her, but hey, a girl's got have some fun) or acting as mentor to a new agent, she is calm, tenacious, unafraid to buck authority (do I love her or what) and usually right. She's not some on the shelf woman who had nothing but the job to keep her company- a widow, she has a daughter who has just given her a grandchild- but she needs and deserves more. The murders and eventual resolution certainly kept my interest, but there are intimations of real mysteries to come: who killed her husband and why, and a backstory involving her father. I cannot wait to read more ! Keep 'em coming Blake!
I'm reading these books via Amazon Kindle and there is an occasional grammatical error. If you can successfully ignore them, you will enjoy these books.I do have one question which was not answered in the manuscript. Why did Agent Demarco show up at the murderer' s house at just the right moment? That's a loose end which could have been dealt with before the last sentence was written.
Kate missed the thrill of the on foot pursuit of a killer, now that she is retired. Finding the daughter of a friend she had gone thru Quantico with. Already her mind has shifted to finding hidden facts, that would lead to having a case. Seeing the parents and asking her to help, they wanted someone competent to look into it. Contacts won’t give her any information. She visits the old boyfriend of the girl, an that didn’t go smoothly. Now having her old boss wanting to see her. A project of cold cases maybe opening and they would want her. When another woman is killed, then they want her ion the case. I like case she maybe an older retire cop, but she wants the action, doesn’t take no for an answer, in fact that makes her more stubborn. She may soften some with being a grandmother soon. Good series and looking forward to more by the author,
