Not much depth, but considering the scope of the author's topic - from ancient civilization to the present time - it would be impossible to evaluate, review and discuss all of the significant moments in French history or the people who shaped it. A good introduction or to brush up on your basic French history.

This book is well written and informative, covering a wide swath of history: from cave dwellers and Roman occupiers to the men and women of the French Renaissance and the days of Napoleon’s rise and fall. As a French teacher, I would recommend it to my students and anyone interested in French history. There’s much here that most Americans don’t know but should.

Although you may think you know the history of France, this book explores more than surface events and brings a better understanding of France and its people.Author Marshall B. Davidson takes us back to the cave dwellers and their drawings - the very beginning of “written” French history - and carries us through to the Fourth Republic. As a Francophile myself, I was amazed at how much I added to my store of information about this country that I love.I highly recommend this book to people like me, who already have a solid knowledge and appreciation of France, as well as to those people who want to enhance their perception of that intriguing country across the pond.

I have read many books about France and what I love about this one is its orderly presentation of history from the time of cave dwellers to the dawn of the Fifth Republic. There is enough detail but not so much that I was overwhelmed.At this time, when France is again becoming a power in the world, it is especially important to know its past and understand its people. France: A History is the perfect book to accomplish that purpose.A fast read and full of information.I highly recommend it.

I like history, and wanted to know a little about France's past without having to wade through a lot of details. This book was perfect, and even provided hyperlinks of key persons or places for further study.

This book provides what was promised. France is France. Why is it like it is? This overview presents a great starting point for one seeking answers.
