I'm not sure how or when I first heard of this book, but it had been on my Amazon wishlist for almost a year. Thanks to lots of birthday Amazon gift cards I finally purchased the book and I haven't been disappointed. I'm not a cake person, but thanks to the Brown Betty Cookbook I could bake a cake every day and eat it even if that means my pants won't fit anymore. The stories and the pictures are a plus and now I'm wondering when I can get to Philadelphia to visit this bakery. The pineapple cake is the family favorite.

I love cookbooks and am happy just to read them and look at the photos. That being said I made my first cake from this book today - Red Velvet. I was worried at how thin the batter was for 3 9" cakes but the cake turned out well - smelled great while baking and produced 3 nice moist sponges. The suggested buttercream on the otherhand was a pain to make with multiple steps and did not yield enough to adequately cover the cake and nowhere near enough to produce a cake like in the photo. Wouldn't make the buttercream again.

I ordered this book because I wanted to add great cookbooks to my collection and make recipes my family would remember. My mother passed away last October and the fondest memories of us together were in the kitchen (garden and sewing). The book arrived today, and honestly as I began to read it I was captivated by the amazing family history that inspired the cookbook. I am so looking forward to trying all the recipes for my family and creating wonderful memories with my 4 year old daughter. Thank you Grandma Betty and Family. Best Regards.

The Brown Betty Cookbook is really a fantastic gift for a home baker, hands down. For those who aspire to a career in pastry arts, or just the person who loves to make a mean Brown Betty, this book is full of lessons, and delicious recipes. The best part is learning the stories behind the deserts that made this type of dessert so famous. I bought the cookbook as a gift for my brother-in-law who is an aspiring baker who sticks straight to the recipes and he absolutely loved it. That very night he made the whole family the Apple Brown Betty Pie/Cobbler (recipe on page 125) and it was positively fantastic.

This is a small Book but is packed with many Wonderful Sweet Recipes for Cakes, Fillings, Frostings, Pies, Cobblers, Puddings, Cookies, Brownies and Bars. "The Brown Betty Cookbook" is Dedicated to the Life of Elizabeth "Betty" Hinton an Old-School Domestic Goddess and Founder of all these Great Recipes. This is more than a Cookbook, is Her Life, her Story and Instructions to make her Sweet Desserts told by her Grandchildren Linda and Norrinda from the Beloved Brown Betty Dessert Boutique in Philadelphia. Each Recipe comes with a Story and a Beautiful Picture and when I saw "German Chocolate Cream Cheese Brownies" and had all the Ingredients needed, I knew I had to make it right away. The Recipe is written very Clear Simple to Understand and the Brownies were Excellent, we ate them all, not a single Crumb Left.The "Soft Sugar Cookies" are also very simple to make and the results are ...so Good! "Lemon Meringue Pie" is one of my Favorites and Betty's Recipe is the Best, easy to make and so Sweet, now I understand why they are hard to find at a Bakery, its Difficult to get the Meringue to hold up while waiting for a Customer to Purchase it. I was Happy to Discovered "Nudie Chocolate Banana Cake with Blackberry Buttercream" ...Wow! a Cake with no Sugar in it, only White Grape Juice, yet so Sweet and Tender, it took me a while to find the White Grape Juice, a little effort, however, it was worth it, even the Blackberry Buttercream doesn't have any Sugar nor the Blackberry Jam. I love the "Caramel Buttercream" although I can only have it once in a while because of its 5 Sticks of Butter ...so Rich! ...The "Buttermilk Pound Cake" is so Excellent...The Brown Betty Cookbook is a Journey through Family History with Scrumptious and Mouth Watering Desserts and I'm Glad I Found It! ...Thank You D.D.

This is such a great cookbook. I made the strawberry letter cake for Easter and everyone loved it. Yes, the cakes are labor intensive but it's worth it.

I bought this cookbook and enjoyed reading stories in the book and looking at the pictures. I never got to make anything out of it, because I loaned it to my neighbor, and repeated several times I wanted it back, but never got it back. Guess it must be a good book

This book is an excellent purchase. The stories about her family is a wonderful addition to the book and the recipes..... FLAWLESS! I actually purchased this book a while back and forgot about it (I have a huge cookbook collection, I think I need therapy) and then when I was organizing them I "found" it. I made the Vanilla Pound Cake with Pineapple Buttercream and it was huge success! The recipes are easy to follow and with amount of eggs and butter called for in each recipe, you know it has to be good.
