I'm not sure how or when I first heard of this book, but it had been on my Amazon wishlist for almost a year. Thanks to lots of birthday Amazon gift cards I finally purchased the book and I haven't been disappointed. I'm not a cake person, but thanks to the Brown Betty Cookbook I could bake a cake every day and eat it even if that means my pants won't fit anymore. The stories and the pictures are a plus and now I'm wondering when I can get to Philadelphia to visit this bakery. The pineapple cake is the family favorite.

I love cookbooks and am happy just to read them and look at the photos. That being said I made my first cake from this book today - Red Velvet. I was worried at how thin the batter was for 3 9" cakes but the cake turned out well - smelled great while baking and produced 3 nice moist sponges. The suggested buttercream on the otherhand was a pain to make with multiple steps and did not yield enough to adequately cover the cake and nowhere near enough to produce a cake like in the photo. Wouldn't make the buttercream again.

I ordered this book because I wanted to add great cookbooks to my collection and make recipes my family would remember. My mother passed away last October and the fondest memories of us together were in the kitchen (garden and sewing). The book arrived today, and honestly as I began to read it I was captivated by the amazing family history that inspired the cookbook. I am so looking forward to trying all the recipes for my family and creating wonderful memories with my 4 year old daughter. Thank you Grandma Betty and Family. Best Regards.

The Brown Betty Cookbook is really a fantastic gift for a home baker, hands down. For those who aspire to a career in pastry arts, or just the person who loves to make a mean Brown Betty, this book is full of lessons, and delicious recipes. The best part is learning the stories behind the deserts that made this type of dessert so famous. I bought the cookbook as a gift for my brother-in-law who is an aspiring baker who sticks straight to the recipes and he absolutely loved it. That very night he made the whole family the Apple Brown Betty Pie/Cobbler (recipe on page 125) and it was positively fantastic.

This is a small Book but is packed with many Wonderful Sweet Recipes for Cakes, Fillings, Frostings, Pies, Cobblers, Puddings, Cookies, Brownies and Bars. "The Brown Betty Cookbook" is Dedicated to the Life of Elizabeth "Betty" Hinton an Old-School Domestic Goddess and Founder of all these Great Recipes. This is more than a Cookbook, is Her Life, her Story and Instructions to make her Sweet Desserts told by her Grandchildren Linda and Norrinda from the Beloved Brown Betty Dessert Boutique in Philadelphia. Each Recipe comes with a Story and a Beautiful Picture and when I saw "German Chocolate Cream Cheese Brownies" and had all the Ingredients needed, I knew I had to make it right away. The Recipe is written very Clear Simple to Understand and the Brownies were Excellent, we ate them all, not a single Crumb Left.The "Soft Sugar Cookies" are also very simple to make and the results are ...so Good! "Lemon Meringue Pie" is one of my Favorites and Betty's Recipe is the Best, easy to make and so Sweet, now I understand why they are hard to find at a Bakery, its Difficult to get the Meringue to hold up while waiting for a Customer to Purchase it. I was Happy to Discovered "Nudie Chocolate Banana Cake with Blackberry Buttercream" ...Wow! a Cake with no Sugar in it, only White Grape Juice, yet so Sweet and Tender, it took me a while to find the White Grape Juice, a little effort, however, it was worth it, even the Blackberry Buttercream doesn't have any Sugar nor the Blackberry Jam. I love the "Caramel Buttercream" although I can only have it once in a while because of its 5 Sticks of Butter ...so Rich! ...The "Buttermilk Pound Cake" is so Excellent...The Brown Betty Cookbook is a Journey through Family History with Scrumptious and Mouth Watering Desserts and I'm Glad I Found It! ...Thank You D.D.

This is such a great cookbook. I made the strawberry letter cake for Easter and everyone loved it. Yes, the cakes are labor intensive but it's worth it.

I bought this cookbook and enjoyed reading stories in the book and looking at the pictures. I never got to make anything out of it, because I loaned it to my neighbor, and repeated several times I wanted it back, but never got it back. Guess it must be a good book

This book is an excellent purchase. The stories about her family is a wonderful addition to the book and the recipes..... FLAWLESS! I actually purchased this book a while back and forgot about it (I have a huge cookbook collection, I think I need therapy) and then when I was organizing them I "found" it. I made the Vanilla Pound Cake with Pineapple Buttercream and it was huge success! The recipes are easy to follow and with amount of eggs and butter called for in each recipe, you know it has to be good.

From an actual nursing aide! The author has now moved on, but he writes about his experience working as a nursing assistant (sometimes called CNAs - certified nursing assistants), in an elder care nursing home. CNA's are the backbone of a nursing home. All the unpleasant work that docs don't do, and now that nurses (RNs, LPNs) don't do are passed on to the CNA. Feeding, showering, toileting, dressing, and basically dealing with all manner of bodily fluids from adults who are no longer able to live on their own.This book is a real look at the hard facts of both living and working in a nursing home.Although he was very clear about the hard work and unpleasantness of the job, the book still managed to have a good amount of humor and touching moments. Found myself smiling several times.After reading, you should have more compassion for both workers and residents of nursing facilities. I could see this book being required reading in some college classes.

I read this book at the point where we moved my mother-in-law from assisted living and into our home under hospice care. I then became her full time at-home CNA.I always appreciated the CNA's who are the first line care givers. I appreciated them even more after reading Nobody's Home, and especially when I had to perform their role at home. I shared the book with several aides who also seemed to enjoy it and confirmed that it captured and represented aspects of their work and experiences.Most importantly, this book gave me the knowledge and courage to perform the mundane caring and hygiene tasks that my mother-in-law required. Gass's accounts of his own experiences helped me get passed these issues, and provide the care my mother-in-law needed and deserved. In effect, Nobody's Home served as an operating manual for me as I learned how to be an aide. It helped me get through an extra-ordinarily difficult time.If you have a loved one in assisted living, a nursing home, in home care, or on hospice, consider reading this book.

At 189 pages, the book does a wonderful job of telling the story of a CNA who goes to work in a nursing home in the Midwest after the death of his mohter. He wants to do meaningful work that would gain depth to his character. He is not the typical aide, having spent years working and learning in a variety of areas. His past experiences and education allow him to write about the job, the nursing home, his colleagues and the residents with beautiful insight and compassion. These words in his Epilogue have stuck with me. "Few of us are prepared for what happens. First we grow up and get stronger by the day. Then one day the process reverses. At first we deny and resist, but evenutally we all surrender."Gass has some wonderful insights for people working in the LTC industry and for those of us who will one day be admitted.

Very informative. I'm a patient and family Hospice volunteer and spend a lot of time in an assisted living facility in memory. I found the writing very accurate. Everyone should read this book. I already had great respect for the RA. They are a special group of people!

My mother went into a nursing home a little over a year ago. It is a 'good' nursing home, yet even so I have been distributed by several things related to her care (or lack thereof). The author gave a realistic picture of daily life in a nursing home from the perspective of someone who works there. I found his book to be very helpful in clarifying my own thinking about the nursing home. I recommend this to anyone who has a loved one in, or about to go into, a nursing home.

This is an awesome book for families of long-term care residents as well as nursing professionals. It makes you so aware of the reality behind the scenes. Some things you can change and other things you just have to be more aware of and deal with them as justifiably as you can. Thanks to this person who went through this experience for the benefit of others.

I've only had this product since the beginning of September and it started turning off randomly after only a month. Now in November, the clicker will turn on for a max of 2 seconds before shutting off again. Replacing the batteries made no difference. Very expensive product to have it stop working after barely 3 months in total with infrequent usage.

I bought this clicker for use in my human physiology class. My professor does clicker questions every lecture and it's part of our grade.I like this clicker because it's simple, easy to use, and works great. I used an iclicker 2 before this one and I'd have to say I prefer the simplicity of this clicker a lot more.

If your professor/teacher/group will allow you to use your phone, go with that option. iClicker has an online subscription service and phone app that is $16ish for 6 months. I bought this and have only used it for one class. The clicker itself works great so no issues there, but the fact that there is a subscription service from the maker of the product that is more student friendly made me knock off a few stars.

It only worked for a month- and it was too late to return..disappointed. I still have 2 months left of the class and I wont be able to use it.

Works as you'd expect and was cheaper than buying from our college bookstore.

Works perfectly for my Physics class requiring this device, but the ID code on the back of the remote, which is key to registering to your remote with your class online, rubbed off and isn't visible anymore after only a year. The device was kept in my backpack during that time, and the rubbing probably was only from handling the device. Embedding the code into the devices plastic would be a better method than just printing it on a section on the back. The photo attached shows the rubbed off code on the bottom (blurred out personal identification info).Batteries lasted the entire time, didn't need to change it. Works really well and reliably, just wish the code didn't rub off.

This iclicker works fine, and does the job it needs. However, it is the older model and more difficult to use than the newer ones. I know some professors won't even allow students to use this model of iclicker anymore. I would recommend buying a newer model one that was used!

So far so good!! It connected to my professor's poll system in seconds. Directions to link it was plain and simple on the back

If you’re dealing with shingles you definitely want to read this book.The author did her own original research so it’s full of information you won’t find anywhere else. She combines Chinese medicine (she's an acupuncturist) along with her personal experiences helping her mother fight her own severe attack of shingles. Hits the mark.

I tend to not give 5 stars just because that's a perfect score. This book may not be perfect but it really is very useful. I'm an acupuncturist and glad to have all this info. I'll also recommend it to my patients. The author became an expert in the treatment of shingles when her mother suffered terribly from it. She has tried several products for internal and external use in treating shingles and relieving some of the very unpleasant symptoms and lists them in the book. I definitely recommend the book to those with the disease or those who treat it. I hope the author writes more books on treating particular conditions naturally.

Ms. Bleecker's tenderness toward her own mother is evident, and it clearly is the "back story" to this book.

I would recommend this book for anyone suffering from shingles, especially post peripetic pain. Only place I have found suggestions for pain relief and specific examples of what to try and how the herbs, etc work.

As with all of her books, trust Deborah to compile the relevant information and put it together in informative and easy to read, comprehensive format. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
