I love The Fabulous Sylvester! The book arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect condition. This is a book for anyone interested in the glittering disco era and the book encompasses all of the feeling of that era.It is a bittersweet look at a magnificent singer who infused disco with gospel and hot buttered soul. It is sad that he died so young.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to relive the exciting disco era and who just loves good music.

Sylvester was a beloved figure inside his circle of admirers; he received cautious regard at best from outside that circle. Now, along comes a long overdue biography, and what a volume. The timing couldn't be more right, as the US has finally put to rest most of the putrid disco backlash. In the stores are not only decent compilations of the disco music but also books like this one that reflect the reality of the subculture. Not the bandwagon that pop radio jumped on, not the Arthur-Murray style competitions, not the faux-glamour suburban nightclubs, but the real deal. Sylvester was both artist and participant in the disco culture-- singer, performance artist, club dancer. The author of this book captures Sylvester in all his complexity and drives home the important part he played in the subculture that was disco.Gamson is an academic, which means that he has been thorough in locating good sources of information. He seemed to have access to so many of the important persons and institutions that played a part in Sylvester's life. He is able to provide a well-rounded depiction of the man's personality, warts and all. He does a good job laying out the formative experiences in this colorful life, be it a mother who role-modeled an imperious love of fashion but later derided a child who followed her example, or a church community that would exploit Sylvester's temperament but denounce him for acts its other members could get away with if they kept hypocritically silent. Sylvester's complicated relationship to the gay community of 70s San Francisco is fascinating. The author does a great job bringing all the early elements around in the end of the book, showing how lasting the formative events are and how much a person can fill in the voids during adulthood.Gamson is more than an academic, however. He is also an entertaining writer and he takes in this book a great tone that fits his subject. He doesn't shy away from any aspects of the life he is depicting. The sex, the slang, the drugs, the erratic behavior, the fun, the bonds, and the subculture's differing values all sparkle like one of Sylvester's jackets. There is no stuffy ivory-tower writing here. Gamson can be as breezy in tone as Sylvester, but he doesn't pander. In fact, among the disco-oriented books that have come out over the last six years, this volume is as well-produced as that other benchmark of writing, *Last Night A DJ Saved My Life*.The 60s teen drag scene, the 1970-era Cockettes, the rock-and-blues recording phase, the disco about which Sylvester had conflicted feelings; then the Hi NRG and activism phases-- all of these are given sharp observation and each makes for vibrant reading material. Gamson covers nearly all the bases, including the way the drag-loving Sylvester was an open mark for a defrauding imposter. It was great to learn how the disco albums came about, and what the exact roles of the band, producers, and record-label suits were. The only omission I found was Sylvester's collaboration with jazzist Herbie Hancock in the 1981 album Magic Windows. Otherwise, Gamson covered all the personal, community, and musical bases.This was great reading for someone like me, familiar with both Sylvester and the 70s; I think the book would appeal to anyone with an open mind who is interested in a character who will swim against the current if he is so created.

I have been waiting for this book to arrive for years and, finally, here it is!I was hooked by the opening chapter which tells the story of a young boy named Tiki Lofton who sneaks out of his bedroom window at night and over to a friend's apartment where, in 1960's South Central, with the help of a young Sylvester, he transforms himself into a "Disquotay." The Disquotays were a group of boys who liked to dress up as sophisticated ladies. And Sylvester, or Dooni as he was known then, was in charge of the wigs."The first Disquotay bash that Tiki went to was over on 120th and Athens, at Etta James's house, sometime around 1965. Etta, who would later be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (largely on the strength of her 1961 hit "At Last") and the Betty Ford Center (largely on the strength of her smack addiction), was already a recording star and a friend to many local Los Angeles drag queens . . . The house, with its swimming pool and fireplace, had stunned her. Women, drag queens, and guys, all sending joyful noises in Tiki's direction; the music had been jumping; Walter Jackson's version of "Lee Cross," Jr. Walker & the All Stars' "Shotgun," "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, Fontella Bass singing "Rescue Me." Gay kids all perched on gigantic speakers, singing and carrying on . . . Tiki had said to herself. "This -- honey, where is this world?" Within months, she would be a full-fledged Disquotay, made-up, bewigged, bejeweled."Joshua Gamsom recreates this world vividly in that first chapter. Simultaneously, he introduces us to the members of Sylvester's family. His beautiful and beloved mother and grandmother. His twin sisters, Dette and Dean. I can't help but think that Sylvester would be very pleased to read this biography.I had the honor of meeting with Sylvester to discuss a project a few years before his death. It was mid-afternoon and he was sewing sequins on something, which was his favorite pasttime. He was always sewing, a talent he picked up from the women who raised him. He walked over to the turntable and put on Patti LaBelle's "If Only You Knew" and said he was dedicating the song at his One-Night-Only concert the following night to his fans and supporters in San Francisco, the city in which he always felt most at home. That night, with Martha Wash at his side, they performed that song together, bouncing their voices off each other inside the Castro Theater. Those two powerful voices, the acoustics of the Castro Theater, and the magical spell he wove with Patti LaBelle's song was something to behold.That Sylvester could hold his own with the amazing Martha Wash is a testament to the power of his falsetto. He didn't have a thin, reedy falsetto. His was full-bodied, gravelly even, and very much in evidence on one of his biggest hits, "Do You Wanna Funk.""So when I tell you, that you're really something, baby, will you stay, or will you go away."Joshua Gamson captures the essence of Sylvester's personality, the diva fits as well as the immense kindness and sensitivity, and wraps it all together into an highly readable book that I wholeheartedly suggest you pick up. I’m afraid that Lang Leav start sounding more like the newer poet writer who just write normal stuff and put random spacingSome of it still beautiful as always, some of it just too modern poet to me (random relatable words with random spacing)

Love the book! My copy were numbered wrong, from page 27 it went to page 61 on the next turn. Am I missing poems?

Lang Leav was my first contemporary poetry love, and no matter how many collections she releases, I genuinely don't believe I'll ever stop adoring them. She always seems to know exactly the right things to say, and when I pick up one of her books, always, it feels like coming home.Love Looks Pretty on You stands apart from her previous collections in its unapologetic, bold feminist theme, and that made it my favorite yet. Lang takes the time to break down what misogyny has done to women, and how it has encouraged us to tear one another down for our sexuality or even our mere, most human mistakes.There are endless references circling back to abuse and the things women in m/f relationships have come to not only fear, but to expect, and while it's a tough read at points—or it was for me, as a survivor—it also feels like a tight hug, a fellow warrior saying, "I understand you," and I didn't know how much I needed that right now until reading these poems and Lang's quick flashes of righteous anger and sorrow.Finally, some of the most heartache-inducing moments in the collection are the references to Lang's mother, which made me take a moment to think of how grateful and blessed I am to never have lived through the struggles of being a refugee. In these moments, it's easy to see that Lang Leav got her bravery honestly.I could easily fill page upon page with quotes and my own gushing over this collection, but I'll stop here and say only that, if you enjoy poignant, powerful, relevant poems from a writer whose work I genuinely believe will go down in history for generations to come, read this.

Love of family, friends, partners, healthy love, broken love, lost love, etc. One of my favorite things about her prose is that despite how short her poems are, they’re not lacking at all in emotion. You get equal gut punch or soft ‘oh’ of wonder no matter the poem. My favorite of Leav’s collections is Lullabies, also the first one I read, coincidence?, but this comes in a close second. Highly recommend.

"In the wrong hands, your past is a weapon."---To be honest, I haven't read much poetry before, but I've heard a lot about Lang Leav, so I wanted to give this work a try. The prose itself was beautiful and her prose and poetry on misogyny was well done, but overall I thought it was a bit shallow and contradictory. Perhaps I'm just not the right audience for this sort of work. I've never had an all encompassing love (sadly) so I couldn't truly relate.However, I will say that some of Leav's poems really touched me. 'Anxiety' was one of them, I instantly recognized myself in her work at that moment.Although this wasn't my cup of tea, I can understand why people praise Leav's poetry.

This is the story of a man who, like Nat Turner, Marcus Garvey, and Malcolm X, is a complex yet seminal hero in the history of African American emancipation. Denmark Vesey was a charasmatic ex-slave--literate, professional, and relatively well-off--who had purchased his own freedom with the winnings from a lottery. Inspired by the success of the revolutionary black republic in Haiti, he persuaded some nine thousand slaves to join him in a revolt. On a June evening in 1822, having gathered guns, and daggers, they were to converge on Charleston, South Carolina, take the city's arsenal, murder the populace, burn the city, and escape by ship to Haiti or Africa. When the uprising was betrayed, Vesey and seventy-seven of his followers were executed, the matter hushed by Charleston's elite for fear of further rebellion. Compelling, informative, and often disturbing, this book is essential to a fuller understanding of the struggle against slavery.

Although much of the evidence about Denmark Vesey's revolt was destroyed, David Robertson rolled with what he had and produced a plausible account of what happened in Charleston, SC. After reading this book, I went to Charleston for the second time and saw the city in a different light. Back in the day, the city was not quaint or picturesque; it was hell for black people, slave and free. After reading this, I better understand why Mother Emanuel Church was a target of racial hate, and I want to read more about Denmark Vesey. Kudos to David Robertson.

Author takes what little we know about Bessy and lays the unarticulated pieces of a historical puzzle out for us to draw useful inferences about the meaning and utility of Veseys model of resistence.Authors let's his whiteness get in the way at the end when surmising the internal narrative of black contemporary inhabitants of Veseys landscape in charleston. Waxing nostalgic wasn't necessary or intellectually honest, just a good reminder of the need for more eyes on this story.

Got this book for my husband and he has read it twice

Very informative and relevant about Charleston. Denmark Vesey and his army of enslaved and free men of color were involved in the AME Church in Charleston where a bible study group were murdered recently by a racist white man. This gives an intense look at the history of slavery and racism in the USA.

Fabulous read, every parent should have their child read this book and every parent should read this book. It gives you a smile of Hope and Redemption that not everyone was passive. Even if they didn't make it. Hallelujah for those who tried God bless.

This was a very interesting history of a man and event I had never heard of before. I now wonder why. The author does an excellent job of moving the thinking about the event to modern times.

A lot of history is stored in this book, anyone who thought slaves were content and happy with their condition because they were housed and fed by others should read the book. How could human beings treat another human so savagely because of their skin color, then use the Bible for justification should read Vesey.

I used the sections appropriate for the countries I was visiting, and they proved to be extremely accurate and comprehensive. I would suggest this book if you are traveling to Africa.

This book was extremely helpful as I try to plan an African safari.

Very helpful to plan future trips especially timing and peak animal possibilities.

The 9th ed. that I just bought directly from AAC has a baby elephant on the cover. Do yourself a favor and buy the 8th ed. This one pales in comparison. The book is smaller in size, 110 pages shorter, and the new maps are pitiful. Not too much in the way of new information. Im not sure why they even bothered with this 9th ed. If I had paid full price it would definately be going back. I would strongly suggest you order the 8th edition, you'll be much happier.

Great book with a lot of useful information about the regions and lodges. The maps are very helpful and so are pictures with the descriptions. The book size makes it easy to take with you and does not take too much space. Looking forward to planning my trip African.

This book is well written and informative, covering a wide swath of history: from cave dwellers and Roman occupiers to the men and women of the French Renaissance and the days of Napoleon’s rise and fall. As a French teacher, I would recommend it to my students and anyone interested in French history. There’s much here that most Americans don’t know but should.

Although you may think you know the history of France, this book explores more than surface events and brings a better understanding of France and its people.Author Marshall B. Davidson takes us back to the cave dwellers and their drawings - the very beginning of “written” French history - and carries us through to the Fourth Republic. As a Francophile myself, I was amazed at how much I added to my store of information about this country that I love.I highly recommend this book to people like me, who already have a solid knowledge and appreciation of France, as well as to those people who want to enhance their perception of that intriguing country across the pond.

I have read many books about France and what I love about this one is its orderly presentation of history from the time of cave dwellers to the dawn of the Fifth Republic. There is enough detail but not so much that I was overwhelmed.At this time, when France is again becoming a power in the world, it is especially important to know its past and understand its people. France: A History is the perfect book to accomplish that purpose.A fast read and full of information.I highly recommend it.

I purchased this book for a young boy who started playing football this Fall for the first time and I thought it would teach him the ups&downs of playing and he thoroughly enjoys the book

My 11 year old son loves these books

Tromly achieves a triple header in fine style with Trouble Never Sleeps, the last book in her Planet Digby trilogy. Zoe and Philip Digby are in the last throes of their investigation into the fate of his vanished little sister Sally, while facing up to their decision to deal with their mutual attraction. Oh, and deal with a host of other problems such as online bullying, slut shaming, absent or clueless parents, corporate terrorism, and whether Zoe should leave for private school just as events typically start to blow up around them, literally and metaphorically. Their friends Sloane, Henry and Felix are back to give them advice, and the usual villains pop up to complicate matters, but it's Zoe and Digby's wisecracking, thrill seeking, roller coaster riding relationship that commands our unstinting focus right up to the very last page and beyond. These books fly off the YA shelves at my library and adults are onto Tromly's charming and witty style - time to get another set of them!
